I have been playing GC3 a lot and probably the main issue I have run into is that on immense maps around turn 200 I start getting a lot of interface freezing. Recently, I made a strategic decision to stay with my dell studio xps 8100 for 1-2 more years while upgrading 2-3 components. I figure $200 or so is a lot better than $2000 or so for a new rig with SSD and etc. 1. First thing I tried was going from 8 -> 16 gb memory. This made the game a lot
Am I the only one who is bored of space battles in the dev stream? For a capability that will likely turn out to be 5% of my gameplay experience with this game, and I'll probably fast forward to the end to view the results, they have been spending a lot of development and dev stream time, for the last few months, on it. I realize moving sliders around, queuing production, and talking to aliens doesn't sell the game very well, but that
Hi, Thought I would post some utility programs I am using to monitor and etc. what's happening while playing GC3. I am also requesting if people have any suggestions for additions/improvements. Certainly these are not essential, and if you are very short of memory (say 6gb or less) you might want to consider running extra programs - not that these programs require a lot of RAM. The process manager in windows will let you know how much memory t
The recording has already been posted, I watched it and it is very good.
Since your wait hang seems reproducible, I definitely think you should go to https://forums.galciv3.com/452855/page/1/ and submit a ticket. Post if you need help with this. (You need a second login to submit a ticket; you need to post a link to a site like dropbox.com for very large files like crash dumps; and once it hangs before you kill it you can force a crash dump with the windows task manage
Given the polishing that Brad stated quite clearly, I can only say that the battle viewer is shaping up to be, oh roughly, 100% fun. And here's the deal: Brad does stuff, if it looks cool he keeps it, if it doesn't he fixes it. The "trails" are unrealistic, sure, but they sure as heck make what is going on a lot easier to follow, which is a big point in watching them, i.e., seeing how different kinds of ships behave. I look at it this way --- it's not vapor tra
QA is Quality Assurance, i.e. final testing for a particular release.
I could be misremembering, but I think all you need to do is DL the game and run it once while you are online with Steam. Then disconnect from the internet, click the Steam heading on the Steam main page and click "go offline". (or vice versa, not sure any more) Essentially what is happening is that the steam client knows the game was run legally, so it allows it to run offline. I know I did try it when I was first working with Steam and it did work (as long as the

@Island Dog: I have put in about a half dozen data sets --- but since the freezes are random and not reproducible, I am not sure how helpful it is. Nevertheless, the next time I get a hard freeze I will send in another ticket. Oh, I should add that I have started using CPUID HWmonitor (free download) that monitors the temperature of various components like GPU and CPU, etc. I was suspicious that I was getting overheating, particularly of the video card, but i
This may be related: on an immense game I seem to hit a "freeze wall" around turn 200 or so. I can't reproduce the freezes, but suddenly they are very frequent. However, a reboot changes things, and I can then play on for some time --- probably straightens out video memory, since I always have at least 6 gB physical memory free (our of 16 total) and tons of page file memory. While playing my GPU memory (I have 1gb) seems to be nearly maxxed out most

The machine is probably 3-4 years old with Win7 64 bit. I'm hoping there will be significant memory optimisation in the next beta. Many wonderful strategy games released in recent year or two play just fine on my machine.
The builds they have been showing in the live str
OK, I am playing turn 187 of my immense game and I happened to have Windows Process Explorer (a dl from microsoft) running. The game hung, and I glanced at the Memory use and there was no change, steady with over 6 gB physical memory available. But when I clicked the GPU tab, it showed the use drop immediately to near zero and the GalCiv process replaced by something called csrss, which appears to be a windows process. Well, if the game hung it's to be expected that
Duplicate post.
A major difference between Civ, etc., and Galciv is that space is porous. "Trench lines" and "bottleneck defenses" don't apply. Violation of one's ZOI should have diplomatic consequences, and there should be a diplomatic option to demand ships to leave friendly space or face DoW (which overrides any ideology block). But that's it, in my opinion.
I really don't understand why anybody thinks Stanley's post is somehow offensive or negative. Isn't everybody that plays computer games and has discussions about their finer points on some forums on the internet still a kid at heart? And are we not talking about, well, a game...? Come on folks, lighten up a little. Assume people have the best of intentions, not the worst. Especially on some int

As an additional point I did once observe a freeze on a tiny game at turn 1. Then played to the end of the game (after aborting and reloading) without problems. Hard to get a handle on. @Rhaegor: if you can reproduce the freeze, definitely submit a ticket using the support faq. I have seen where sometimes one can actually save a game during a wait freeze, if so, you can try saving and reloading. Other than that, I know the "wait" hang is a kn

I had the problem of the game not shutting down smoothly when I exited, so that Steam for example, would not close right away. I used to reboot regularly. However, since Beta 4 (and I might add, since 16 gB memory, though I don't know what that would have to do with it) I do not have this at all - the game shuts down fast and restarting doesn't seem to create any memory issues judging from a performance monitor I often run --- that is starting a new game results in the s
My laptop has 8G RAM too, and I've never seen one of these freezes, even on an immense map. Maybe it does have to do with video ram, since my nVidia card has 4G. But I think that is the point where I jump to a new rig entirely, and that isn't happening for a while. &
It's true that one can get used to the different sizes and logistics for each, but a number on the tooltip for a ship would definitely be a convenience. So I agree with the OP; I want to think about strategy not what size my ship is and whether it will fit into a fleet and so on.
