Over all we have a lot more planned, but as you can see its hard to keep the screen from becoming overly complicated, however we still have to make sure our hard core designers can get to the more advanced features, this will be a balancing act that we will be playing with over the next few months, the more feedback we get the better
Might I suggest an advanced mode and a standard mode are the way to go, that way you can allow peopl

Can I request you add a toggle button rather than just pressing contol, so I can use the editor in a hardpoint ignoring mode that maybe also doesn't show the hardpoints. A sort of toggle hardpoint on/off button, I know there are issues with them at the moment from reading the other thread, I'm just not sure that even where they working they would make it easier to design the sort of ships I'd like too. By the way are there any other keyboard tips or shortcuts you c
Thanks I'll read that other thread and see how you plan to fix hard points because at the moment they do seem to make it harder rather than easier. Great to here though that there is a way to ignore them and to snap something to the origin that makes it much easier to build the sort of ships I have in mind.
As far as I can see hardpoints are probably just a relic of how the ship designer can about according to the recent pod cast I listened to origionally it was just allowing you to place active moduals like weapons and engines on a hull, when someone thought it looked cool mounting a hull on a hull and the ship designer was born. My question to star dock why have hardpoints anymore at all they just restrict design freedom and are fiddley making the designer harder to use. why ca
I thought I’d write up my initial feedback on the ship designer and post it before reading anything else here as I don’t want to be biased by other people’s opinions at this stage. Sorry if this sounds harsh, I love the ship designer but think there is room for improvement. Bugs: (1) Animation, when setting parts to rotate with oscillate rather than complete rotation they seemed sometimes to be translated away from the main body e.g. mo
Depends how your sensors work, electromagnetic sensors both visual and radar are useless across the sort of distances you are talking infact radar is worse as an active electromagnetic sensor it has to get there and back, so to see an object 1 light year away with powerful enough radar would take 2 years. You'd need some sort of superliminal sensor technology to see in real time what was going on light years away anyway, it's a game so we ignore this practical problem.

Yes in reality there are all sorts of ways planets not suitable for habitation could be used. For instance gas giants could be mined from orbit. Science bases could be established on planets with points of special interest. Millitary outposts, etc. So yes they should allow you to do somethign with them maybe even terraform the solid ones in the late game.
Any Shield or hull that could withstand particle collisions at those relative velocities would be impervious to most combat weapons from the start. Not to mention that while our current understanding of physics does not rule out warp drives and wormholes, it does suggest energy shields of the type seen in sci-fi are impossible with the exception of plasma curtains which we already have, still I'm happy to overlook that since force fields are fun, (basicly fields don
Actually it's an interesting question as to what sort of sensors ships use to navigate while at warp speeds? Electromagnetic sensors such as visual sensors would be useless. In fact you'd probably have to caculate and lay in a destination before hand and hope you didn't hit anything. I read an article once by a physics student who had worked out the math for a warp drive and concluded it would be possible if you had enough energy and some negative mass matte
I understand this. My vision of multiple maps is to make it fairly minimalistic, as in Spore: one could scroll over a star and see the planets, together with their TerraScores (poorly done analogue of Planet Quality). However, one could only travel from star to star in that game, or within a system from planet to planet: I would preserve hexes/triangles to allow for a greater range of movement.
I don't think this i
They have said strategic resources will be in the game that will enable you to build things you can't without them already haven't they?
As you develop the planet you could see more and more city lights from space in the orbital view (which could also be seen in the space view as well as some people have already suggested).
This was an idea I was toying with a few months ago when considering developing a 4x space game for Android since I can't find a good one. Trying to think how to do this via some procedural texturing. but would love to see this

Well I agree with you on planetary invasion I always thought that needed a lot more depth than it got in GCII, the old radio show was very perfuctory indeed. The issue as I see it for the eye candy in the colony view is to not have it distract from the functionality of that view, I've never seen a 4x space game that managed to make such a view both detailed graphicly and functional must show a spinning globe or a picture of one city, etc. the view ideally needs to be pretty
Ok I was blocking out the unreleased bit :-) so when can we expect the new alpha to be released on steam?
Ship yard in alpha indeed is that up on steam yet [e digicons][/e] .
[e digicons]:D[/e] Wow....really the ship designer massive grins, when is this patch available now??? If so my wife is just going to have to be understanding tonight.
[e digicons]:D[/e] Really I hadn't looked yet today. Ok consider me gone to the vault.
when clicking on a planet it doesn't just pop-up a planet screen but zooms into to the planet transitioning from space view to a 3d world view which unrolls to a flat map.
That would be fun to see if not a hudge priority.
