You can buy AI's constructors, though, which you can build a shipyard out of--for a steep price. Unless the AI has a negative money balance, in which case he will give it to you for free.

Solution to 400-citizen sorting problem: 1). Select "Resesrch" 2) Select "Beyond Mortality" 3) Get out of that window 4). Select a scientist 5) Select "Promote Citizen" 6). Select "Epiphany" 7). Win the game

I don't think that is expected behavior. You cannot diplomatic trade for shipyards. You can rush buy them for 750bc if your planet is not sponsoring another shipyard.

Do it with city states. Mongolia takes a city state. Negative warmonger diplomacy for him. You go to war with Mongolia and liberate city state. Everybody but Mongolia loves you. City defenses are trashed, indefensible city, so just let Mongolia retake it. Everybody hates Mongolia more. Re-liberate. Everybody loves you more. Repeat. Pretty soon everybody is at war with Mongolia.
You need a bigger map and more civilizations. You graduated.
Actually, I finished the godlike Milky Way campaign by the third UP vote as well. Only difference was a tech victory--and the same number of turns took over a week to play, as opposed to 3 hours. I think I had +298% in manufacturing from precursor relics alone. 10 planets that could produce citizens in 25 turns. Epiphany, epiphany, Victory. Biggest difference as all the
I could also see an abuse potential if your little buddy civ is getting beat up. You give them planet back for points, then let the big bad civ take it again. You take it back, give it to your buddy for more points, etc. Tough to abuse on a large map, but could be easy to do on a small.
Works like a charm in Civ V, doesn't it?

So if an alien race of robotic, metallic cylons take over earth and enslave us, we can tell the amoeba, intelligent slime-like species, "Thank you, intelligent slime-like amoeba life forms for liberating Earth."

Who's to say Stardock devs are not talented people capable of it? I don't think Brad's a Ph.D., but he's doing AI. If he can build a 200-person company and an AI, he could likely do it. Is Ideology moddable? I'm not seeing an IdeologyDefs.xml file. If it is, I'll try modding it and see what I come up with. If not, I can just post some ideas.

Frogboy was describing earlier that the AI is already tableized, in that it reads off the XML and makes parameterized decisions based on that. That would be extremely difficult to code a good AI for. I have an idea: take a machine learning approach. Have AI's play one another overnight with different XML's, collect the data and train. Now measure different measures, such as production, military, money, winning, and weight them. Use ML to infer the

So, to convince you on the ideology point: Benevolent can rock in a Tiny galaxy. Free colonies? That and Brindle are a big deal when you've only got 3 colonizable planets. On anything large, though, not so much. You get a few free administration, but 51 planets instead of 50 is not a big deal. Certainly not enough to spend an empire-wide ideology over. Besides, you can hire colony ships as mercenaries. The 150 research point pick is nice in the
But GalCiv devs are oblivious to such imagination.
:( I politely disagree with this part. I think this game's imagination has outrun its execution. And I want to point out, it's not just game developers that run into this problem: ANY entrepreneur trying to market ANY product has this problem. It's why 90% of startup businesses fail: execution, execution, execution. The ideas are there. Ideas are cheap, in fact.

I concur. While I can't say that Civ is factually, objectively the better game, the market seems to agree that it is. And the key word here is "executed". Galciv3 has no shortage of brilliant ideas--more than Civ, in fact. It's just not executed on as much. Case in point: the economic model. Having raw production, % bonuses to raw production, % bonuses to net production? It's brilliant. Having planet tiles where you can build mul

My rule of thumb: aim for 100% approval, period. You're better off reducing population down to get the 100% (without resorting to extreme measures, like building colony ships and decommissioning them). Growth "bonuses" are sometimes a curse; and regardless, I never see you coming out ahead building hospitals. Will you ever make back your social production you sunk into the hospital because you grew faster? Rarely. Cities are good if you have the

Questions about modding: 1) When I copy everything from the game install folder to my Documents/Mods folder, the game doesn't start up. Lots of error messages. 2) After I delete all the xml files in my mod directory necessary so that the game at least starts (no ASSERT fires, no error messages, etc.), the game core dumps as soon as I start a game. The default files in the game install directory clearly are not right when you copy them. 3) &nbs

Well this stopped my mod dead in its tracks. I just wanted to add an option to enhance certain structures using resources. i.e. upgrade Xeno Factory to Enhanced Xeno Factory using 2 antimatter, Entertainment Center to Enhanced Entertainment Center using 1 Harmony Crystal, etc.. But I also wanted to be able to upgrade Xeno Factory to Mega. Can't do that.

I haven't felt a late game grind, myself. I actually feel there is some late game that I'm missing out on. Like I epiphany Huge hulls and doom rays. Build some big ships, they dominate. Epiphany epiphany...tech victory, done. Is there no epic space battle at the end, my 10 doom dreadnoughts to his 30 nightmare corvettes? Admittedly, this is 4x--not a RPG. I just want to get some use out of those late techs, and they not be just stepping stones to te
Wicked first article. Great read. Being a PC developer myself, I am concerned about the current platform shift trend from Desktop to Mobile. Personally, I have no interest in smart phones, tablets, or even laptops. The types of software and games that interest me, just do not translate to tiny touch screens. The times, they are-a-changin'.
You should see how concerned we are on the hardware side. Those vide
