Like putting together legos Ball types: command, weapons, engines, life support, medical, troops, cargo/storage, colony, constructor, survey, etc.
A pragmatic race with simple designs like spheres and cubes. Thinking what will take the stress of moving in a 3d environment. A malevolent race that designs ships like swords. A benevolent race that likes curves and the such to make ships works of art.

Lava world. You can not colonize it but you can get lots of Durantium. Rock world. You can colonize it but the atmosphere is CO2 so must be in domes causing fewer tiles to be available. To get more Tiles you need to research better domes. Starbase with a colony Ring. In place of military rings. A colony ring would give more influence and diplomacy then other rings but not as much as a world.
Spys Diplo screen Govern screen telling you about others. They all give some info in this area.
IMHO the complaints come from GC being actively updated and changed so much. Another complaint would be that when things change people think it is a bug when their old strategy does not work.. In fairness some bugs get introduced but are being actively squashed ASAAP. Games can have big hype live short and die or do like GC is doing and focus on the long term.
I read at one time that HDD start on 63 and SSD need to start on 64.
