You guys make me sad :'c
I use the facts as reasons to go support alternatives when possible. I try to use the facts to make me do something instead of sitting around and simply complaining. Ideally, I would use the facts as fuel to motivate me to make a viable alternative, but I haven't been very successful thus far (I always seem to find something else to do other than work on this).

@ michaelwhittaker Could you make better thread titles? You seem to pick a single word as the title of your threads instead of using a more descriptive title. A good thread title should be descriptive yet short. It should be an advertisement to draw people in (those who might be interested), not be vague (which could mean just about anything). If I were to make a thread like this, I might have use the title "Is Cyberlink a virus?". The example I gave marks Cyberlink as t

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't want to do anything with Steam. I've only pre-ordered because I wanted a number of questions answered, and I figured I could find some of those hard answers by getting my hands dirty. Also if I find those answer, I can provide them to other people. Also if I'm involved in the development process, I could possibly steer GalCiv 3 in a better direction. ---- Your questions: 1a. Steam will be required to download the
Thanks for more information. I've been paying attention since the Oxide engine was mentioned. I wonder what will come next.
My thought is, what happens when the minor civ is uplifted mid game? Do they suddenly get a bunch of planets to so they can compete with the established civilizations? If a minor civilization is uplifted without proper resources, it would be easy prey for the other civilizations. If a minor civ is uplifted mid game, but it has no means to do anything, did anything change?
My bad. I'll update my previous post.

"Do I get a Steam key if I become a founder?" Oh no no no. What gives you that idea? When you become a founder you are throwing money at Stardock. Nothing more. They give you a fancy badge. Thats all. If you expect a Steam key, you will have to buy that separately when it shows up on the store. Everyone else who has replied thus far are merely confused. /joke ---- Serious now. Both founder packages will give you a Steam key at some point
Again, assumptions. Based on the forums, a relative handful of users are demanding tactical combat. A different handful are dead set against it. The hundreds of thousands of users who aren't posting here hold opinions we can't know with any accuracy. There are dangers in basing any action solely on those users agitated enough to post on the official forums in hopes of game developers seeing their opinions. Neither of us speak for a
While it is certainly nice that work is being done to make downloading these files work better, there are still problems. The one I seem to be noticing right now is that some of the file names are being cut short. When I try to download "UI - Graphs screens.jpg" or "UI - Research Screen Alpha01.jpg", the downloader tries to download a file named "UI.jpg".
They are replacing good vs evil with ideologies. We don't have much information as to what that will be, but it is implied they will leaving the good is dumb model behind. It should be noted that previous versions of the game was unfortunately hard coded. That meant much of the code was part of the program and not something you could change by altering an xml file. That meant that it would take a lot of work to make it possible to make a new planet improvement that could functi

Leave that satisfaction out of a game like this and it wouldn't be as attractive for me anymore
Too
Sure, you got a point, but name one empire that expanded without warfare at some point?
When did I say no warfare? What I said was that people who want a large amount of tactical battles should look for a different game, not try to turn a good strategy game into a game that include large amounts of tactical battles. Such a change can turn away the original fans of the games. If such a thing were to be allowed, then I fe
I think you make unwarranted assumptions; I like tactical combat in other games. GalCiv is the go to game when a person wants a strategy game but *doesn't* want a tactical level. There aren't many choices out there that don't have tactical combat; the lack is a selling point for GalCiv, not a weakness to be fixed.
I agree. It is a selling point. I don't know many games off hand that is a strong strategy ga
I see that the diplomacy screen is more compact now, and with more categories and options (like 15 bc per turn). I also want to go look at some of those techs in detail.
I think that what Stardock doesn't want is for people to take a glance at the Alpha, decide the final product will be bad because the Alpha is incomplete and horribly buggy, and then go telling everyone that the game is terrible. While there would be many good people who would wouldn't listen to such people, many more people will probably assume that the person knows what they are talking about on the grounds that they played the Alpha. The problem is that many people don&
Me. I don't want to mount modules if I don't want to. I want the functional benefits without needing to add the cosmetic effects that normally comes with the modules. If I try to do something different, I have to figure out where all the modules go (some are easier to place than others). I frequently use a lot of defense modules, so I often have to design my ships so I have room to place those modules without my ships looking horrible. Designing my ships with that considera
In science fiction writing, it is not a good practice to base your fictional science on another person's fictional science. If the writer made errors with their fictional science, then basing your fictional science on their fictional science will likely cause your fictional science to inherit their problems. The 3 major mistakes I can think of at the moment is: A. The science the writer used at the time is outdated (and is now inaccurate or completely replaced). B. T
The announcement of galactic civ 3, encourages me to start huge campaign on suicidal and see if I can finish before release of beta ^^. Time to re visit the past
You have at least a month and a half to finish. The alpha will not start until some time next year. It should be enough time for you to take your time playing more than a few maps.
It'll be Steam by default. Stardock lacks the means at this time to fight Steam. If they want multiplayer and other online features, their best way to go about adding those to the game is to use Steam and Steamworks. Alternatives cost time and money (and lots of it). From what I understand, when the alpha begins, you will be sent your Steam keys. Not a nano second sooner. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
I think Ashbery76 is referring to something in dead tree format (paper). As such this information might not exist on the net. Some magazines and other news businesses like keeping information exclusive. Still, I agree that the OP didn't follow internet etiquette. There is a minimum amount of information that one should provide if you start a internet forum thread (like links to sources of relevant information if possible). For instance, I'm not really sure if this thread is

Red Dwarfs can in theory last trillions of years (the known universe has only been around for a fraction of that). A large star tends to last millions of years, while medium sized stars last billions of years. Basically larger star = shorter life span. If you were to use a Red Dwarf as the core, you probably be making a smaller Dyson sphere. A Red Dwarf is a small star. The light a
I don't expect that the devs will be introducing many alien species that break the humanoid mold. They provided a good explanation as to why human being are practically the mold the others are made from, and the standard the others are judged by. This effect had even made the Altarians practically human. The Thalans were supposed to be odd because they were supposed to be far removed from this effect that turned aliens into human like species. I'm not sure why the one in th
I'm hoping that tactical battles will not become a dominant feature in GalCiv 3. I've played games that mixed strategy and tactical features, and I didn't like them. I'm talking about games like Sword of the Stars and Rome: Total War. In some cases, you might play 3 tactical battles (maybe more) for every strategy turn you play. That gets real tiring real quick. More so if you were looking to play the strategy part of the game, not the tactical. Thus far, from what
