I agree on the techtree. More I look at it, less I really like it. Your suggestion is excellent, GC2 had in my view excellent techtree so I would like to see something in that spirit implemented here.

Moving around the tool I can get it to increase some value by one while others are not reduced. It isn't a good design IMHO when people are forced to do mindless micromanagement so to gain minor benefits (must have on highest diffculties or in multiplayer, even if it's minor). Played the game a bit, one whole match actually and came up with following situation: My research had just finished, but I had not yet picked new one. However, my survey ships popped two research related events which were thus wasted. Could be working as intended, make sure you always have research going on when surveying, but also bit annoying.

I personally do not think ships should get special abilities that are not enabled by their setup. As I see it, the experience should represent the skill of crew to squeeze every last bit out of their ships systems, maybe doing some unofficial modifications to it as well. Suddenly developing a deathray kind of fights against this idea.

Not really that great leap of faith mate. Stardock tends to be reliable in it's products. Let's compare my experiences with two preorders from two different publishers.
