I use the generalized version. I know it's hard to update all techs for all races! I tried several times (and failed) to create a general tech tree just for humans and it's a very long xml it takes too long even by using notepad++. I don't like the charachter M being used with numbers like M33, M35 and so on. Is it possible to create my own naming? Like X1, F4 etc. I d'like to use different letters for different ships, for example for civilian ships like colony, constructor, freighter C. Since I dislike specializations and I don't play the game since they were enforced I'd like to create a mod to disable them. I have tried to alter tech trees but the game crashed. Although I have some experience with mods I can't make it work. Can someone give directions how to disable tech specializations? Or even better is there already a mod for this?

I started making my own immense map and it's lots of work because of the missing elements mentioned above. It's really tiresome having to select tiny stars and then move cursor to delete system and confirm! If you click by mistake anywhere else you miss it and you have to click the star again! It's funny many people here trying to defend the new limitation called "specialization" saying it makes game more interesting, using different strategy or the last ridiculous comment above which suggests that we want to play as several races at once... pfffffff..... Ideology was already enough to pick between 3 choices everytime you colonize a planet, game already had this. Putting some techs in a box and call them specializations its nothing but a limtation. If someone wants to research one of the thre he can and then invest in different tech ignoring the other two. When I want to improve my ship tech I will learn to make it harder, cheaper, smaller why just one? For example today computers are faster, smaller and cheaper than they were 20 years ago. I really hate it. To the point I don't want to play the game anymore, its a game breaker. In all strategy games I focus on research and in GC3 my custom human race their first priority is to research, its part of my strategy. Playing with "specializations" sucks... I exited the game immediately I can't stand this... Looking in the xml files seems to be a nightmare to disable them someone needs to spend hours and hours to make a mod for tech to work properly. <s

Good news, Im also trying and testing.. A good idea would be to use the techdefs before the Beta 6 and use it as a base to modify the updated one and making it work exactly like it should!

Oh well I was anxious to play the Beta 6 but hate the tech specialization so much that I will postpone it untill there is a solution. My custom race in GC and every other strategy game I play focuses in research, so this limitation it's a game breaker to me to the point I don't like the game like this anymore. I totally agree. There should be borders and respected by AI. In all strategy games and sci-fi movies or tv series there are borders in space. Entering them with no permission means war! Reading TechDefs.xml I noticed Tech Point which is always 1 perhaps this counts as one per category so the specialization. Perhaps making them all 0 will disable specialization? [e digicons]:|[/e]

My custom human race. They are based mostly on research, spending is locked 60% Research 40% Manufacturing. Plus they get a research trait bonus. I play peaceful and nice investing to develop my planets while I colonize more and more to the farthest possible any direction. By the time I meet other factions I have already a large empire no military power or tech but I play it nice on them and if they dare to colonize a planet in my area they doom themselves... culture flip is

Personally I don't like the globe system in diplomacy screen but ideology screen this is where I would like more prominent rings. What I have alredy unlocked and what not. When you go and check ideology with no points to spent you can't see which ones are unlocked and which ones are still locked the difference between two is hardly noticeable.
