Only just noticed this today, but some of our ships from this thread are getting used to promote the ship designing aspect on the Steam store page, which is pretty cool.  Or at least I'm assuming they are using the images from this thread given they used my forum name and not my steam id.

Link to the store page.

The Probe
(Huge assault ship)

The ultimate pain in the ass for your enemies. Those who survive an encounter with the Probe are left with a trauma that lasts the rest of their life.

You know where its name is coming from ;) .

The Grand Mother Ship
(Huge carrier)

You have your fighter motherships, but the Grand Mother Ship is a completely different scale of a beast.

Now for something completely different:

Not a ship, but an observation concerning ship design.

When the origin (cube) is not near the middle of the ship length (as measured over the z-axis) the game will scale the ship incorrectly. This can be quite clearly seen when you select the ship in the shipyard where the ship then will appear to be too small relative to the available view (screen estate), and in the ship icon where the ship will not be properly be fitted to the icon. On the galactic map the scaling/origin error is less obvious, but it is still there.

How this off-center-origin/scaling problem impacts the battleviewer i can not predict, but i thought to give warning to allow ship designers the opportunity to revisit their designs before problems occur.

PS:

I have seen this problem also in ship designs that i acquired from other people.

Grand Mother Ship  Cool Ship!!!

My first ship a humble probe. The ring rotates, the entire body inside the ring also rotates. Unfortunately when actually built, several components shifted location. I'll have to make a simpler version later.

Ships are all player created ship designs done with the in game ship designer. They are not in the actual game. Every ship designer here has created ships they will use for races already in the games or a customized race the player will create.

I am asking if we can export custom ships so another player can use them either separately or in a package with a custom race, so we can make race/ship mods.

I understand custom races are currently not in yet, but just talking about the ships themselves, are they created in external files? Also I understand these features might be here in the future, I am just confused how it'll be handled, it'd be nice to be able to get the ship files separate to upload to websites in a ship database though.

Saareth yes, some of us are already trading back & forth.

OK I have windows on E drive most likely your is on C drive.

E:\Users\NASTY\Documents\My Games\GalCiv3\Designs

In the designs folder you`ll see alot of files.

You`ll need three files for each ship.

sample files

Constructor M1A HYWP 8_75AB4016209C4044B17A1EF5F7855898.PNG this file is the thumbnail

Constructor M1A HYWP 8_75AB4016209C4044B17A1EF5F7855898.ship

Constructor M1A HYWP 8_75AB4016209C4044B17A1EF5F7855898.objgfxcfg

This Constructor is a Hyper Warp 8 engines. If I was to send this to you or any one else these are the files I wound Zip. up and send. Or upload to a file sharing host.

Make sure you get the right name files. so you`ll a .png a .ship and a .objgfxcfg

You can trade files by email or upload an download files with any file sharing websites such as Mediafire. We are also hoping Stardock will add a file share page for ships and mods in the future.

Rand Johnson I just don't like to stretch parts so much that a distort. The ship looks good though, except when you zoom in. But it'll look perfect in-game :P So no biggy i guess, just personal preference.

I don't know how you surmised I over stretched parts. Every part is in scale according to actual ship schematics I used as my references. I am not going make exact replica's on Star Trek designs so I am getting them as close as possible as the designer will allow. I am doing them for a planned Star Trek game mod for GC3.

Thank you for your comment.

Take no notice rand, their all just green eyed monsters lovely excelsior model btw and as someone whose also done star trek ships albeit on GC2 I stand in awe of your ship designing skills and may I pick your brains later on about how to design the saucer sections?

Great so I can start building a custom race right now :), the ships at least!

I hope they add it soon too, so we don't lose these great ships people are making, if not, can we just setup a temporary list of files in a thread till then?

Not the best pics, but:

The Tribal class; small hull. Lead ship: Shoshone

The Sword class, small hull. Lead ship: Excalibur

The Shiloh class; medium hull. Lead ship: Shiloh

Fast combat transport; medium hull. Lead ship: von Moltke

As you can see they are STrek-ish but not canon STrek.
