OK, I'm in, and that just boosted The Republic - er, I mean US - over Gamma Squad and into 8th. Truly, it is sad to see the Old Order fade, but progress marches on. I will chew on ideas for a new nick - somehow mine doesn't really fit the Imperial theme. How about that logo? I use Corel and Photoshop on a regular basis, and would be happy to help out. I'm off to the Outer Rim Territories to finish off the current game - I could use a nice, shiny medal or two. Ma

Sorry about the double post - minor Comcast hiccup. Also took so long to write that I see my hint on changing the nick isn't needed...

Here's Wizard Ray's response on that from a few days back: #1 by Veteran Ray the Wanderer - 7/5/2003 7:09:11 PM To change your nick, go to wincustomize.com. Login using your the same Galciv.com account. Select edit account and then change nick. I'd like to have a direct hyperlink so that I don't get accused of plagiarism here, but I don't know how to set up a hyperlink on this forum. Any suggestions? I know plenty of people have done it before.
I like some old MOO2 musics and some melodical trance-type music, nothing too bass jumping music...
If we're on soundtracks, how about Star Trek: The Motion(less) Picture? If you're looking for something trance-inducing, there's nothing better than that endless "V'ger" piece. Bet EBZeroMatrix could get an entire game in during that one.
Wait! Maybe Vasueden is the guy from the "i want galvic serial number" thread! :D When I was surfing the posts over the weekend, noticed that somebody had the nerve to call the majestic PontiusBruinPilot "juvenile" or something to that effect. Efficient, ruthless and maybe a touch on the sarcastic side when people have it coming, but not juvenile. Perspective is a wonderful thing. Also noticed this fine example of pre-pubescence posting in the White Council's hallowed halls. I
Working on something similar myself - although I'm away from my own PC over the holiday, so I'm sadly just surfing the posts... Check out the "GC Mods" nav bar on the left side of your screen. You're after the "Ship Encoder" posted by CariElf near the top of the page. It comes with basic instructions.
Fellow bug Tru, Did the Altairians wipe out your mini-freighters during the war? In my (admittedly limited) experience, 3-4 good trade routes makes the difference between a marginal empire and one that's rolling in dough. Although it's since been pointed out to me as a bad long-term strategy, you can jack up taxes until your tax income is on the verge of dropping (usually around 60%). Next, fiddle with your spending slider until your the total for the turn goes positive. Most i
Again, didn't know that Stardock Central had a chat area - skipped all of the details and went straight to the download section. Thanks for the tip. Alcohol is fortunately available in the Nashville area, allowing me to easily stock up before an extended voyage into the galaxy.
Oh mighty PontiusBruinPilot, Thank you for sparing a bit of your glorious wisdom on a lowly newbie. Truly, I am not worthy of your attentions but am humbly grateful all the same. BTW, is boot-licking in? Probably should have asked that first.
Though we don't have many blue smiley faces amongst us, tactics do not matter with us. Efficiency is what counts in the end.
Still getting the feel for the game and trying to ramp up my difficulty level in
Oh mighty and glorious Emperor PontiusBruinPilot: As a lowly, unaligned, independent newbie, I seek the guidance of others more experienced in the matter of empires. Specifically, I'm looking for info on what sets you apart from the others. One of your most prolific lieutenants, the fearsome and hyper-active EBZeroMatrix, has graciously invited me to post on this thread to bring the matter before your awe-inspiring and august presence. Sadly, my rattletrap freighter's control p
OK, 5 scant hours of sleep and I'm back...(bad William Shatner voice) MUST - HAVE - MORE - COFFEE! Mighty Wizard Ray, thanks for the info - also like the "personal challenge" idea I've seen crop up on your thread recently. This is a nifty idea that helps to keep the game fresh - let's see if it catches on elsewhere. EBZeroMatrix - Glad I wouldn't need to keep up with your production, as four games in a DAY would make me cut back on other activities - working, sleeping, eating..
Wow, can't keep up on the posting here - and it's 2:25 AM, so I can't keep up much longer...! Umm, EBZeroMatrix, I know y'all are pirates. If I sign on, do I get any benefits other than a bunk in the biggest, baddest chunk of sheet metal in the Metaverse and a share of the plunder? Can I take it in that wonderful, delicious J.D.? And as for "galvic boy," he managed to get exiled, which must be some kind of an accomplishment...
Michael, you caught me in mid-reply - sorry about skipping you... As a Tennesseean (is that a noun? sounds good), home to the magical and wondrous elixir known as Jack Daniels - nay, SIR JOHN Daniels, and being a fan of George Thorgood tunes to boot, I can appreciate those points. I find that MOO3 is actually a fun game after a few shots, perhaps even washed down with one of those fine Aussie or German brews. :d But you spoiled it with the Jim Beam logo. Cain't have none
Thanks, Ray. I believe MadMaz tipped me off to their website in his Star Wars thread - didn't know they were an actual GalCiv empire, though. How about the White Council? It's good, noble and respectable to suggest a fit in another organization (fits your motif, all right), and I definitely appreciate the info, but I'm interested in looking at a spectrum and thought other newbies and independents might be as well.
For those of us new independents who haven't yet committed to an empire (and don't have a high enough point total to be personally recruited - I've only posted 2 games), the assortment of major empires is daunting. Thought it might be interesting to ask the following: What exactly do you do except add your point totals together and talk about the next empire to target? This isn't a negative comment, by the way. The whole point of a ranking board is to move up, and if that's wha
Thanks for the tip. I've been prioritizing soil enhancement and hab improvement as my 1st two projects on each planet, and then looking on to production, econ and ship enhancers. Probably should worry more about keeping the people happy. That's what I get for using MOO as my planetary management benchmark - "if they're not revolting, they're happy enough."
That would explain it - my lower-quality worlds have a lower morale, and the conquered worlds have a PQ similar to the best in my empire, i.e. high morale. I guess I'll have to pass on colonizing near-habitable worlds around lousy stars, and choke for a few turns on lower taxes. :sniff!:
OK, as I'm ramping up my play into the more difficult levels, a problem that was only an annoyance before is now a major issue. I can't seem to keep pace with the breeding habits of the other races. Taking a look at the mini-map, the other races balloon in population compared to my apparently family-planning-conscious citizens. Even using precious racial picks on population growth doesn't seem to help much. I could understand this if it was restricted to the minor races - after all, the
Or that star fighters move at about 40 MPH on the movie screen? And maneuver better than a World War I biplane? G-forces, anyone? "GNN update - the Yor have conquered the galaxy simply because all of their opponents were biological. During space battles, opposing crews were converted into sticky paste during high-speed maneuvering, leaving their planets undefended."
Yor do seem to be hapless. Just finished a game where they were already sucking wind, then lost half their empire to the Fundamentalists, and things went downhill from there. When they surrendered their systems to me (must have made a great impression the one time I talked to them), I got two planets. Whoopee. I actually believe that the evil robot image of the Yor is just a stage prop, and that they really all look and talk like Twiki from the 1970's Buck Rogers TV series. "Biddi, Bidd
Cotal, not sure, but the rulebook says you can - never been there. I actually like the corvette. During the midgame (when battleships and the occasional dreadnought are standard ships of the line), you can crank out a "wolfpack" of 8-12 'vettes in about 2 turns - maybe 3. Turn them into a fleet (WITHOUT any escort - it'll just kill the wolfpack's speed advantage), send 'em into enemy territory, and start looking for soft targets - starbases without a ton of add-ons, freighters, mini-fre
Of all of the possible mods, here's an easy one: On the main game screen, PLEASE add a counter showing the number of months left until the next election, AND the number of months left until the next Council meeting. When you know you're getting close to an election, it's a pain having to go to the Domestic Policy screen just to check the counter. Don't know how many elections I've lost in the early game (before all of the Morale wonders, techs and buildings appear) because I fo
