You had me until the religion bit... And to be honest, I'd be fine with the display of Christian icons in schools... *IF* equal space was given to other faiths on the walls of our classrooms. Our founders were Christians, that is true... but people originally came here to escape religious persecution, to escape the constant battle they faced to defend their beliefs against the establishment. They created a land where all people are given equal voice

In the mid 80s we were just getting used to the basic GUI... I wonder what similar concepts could even exist... unless they mean that you could change the black and white pattern of the titlebars on windows. In 87, I was the ripe old age of *5* There wasn't anything close to desktop customizability... the stickies program (which is as close to a desktop widget as you can claim for older macs) didn't come around until System 7... a few years away at th

As was mentioned in my previous article, CIGNA made me a job offer to work in their IT Project Management group up in Hartford, CT... well yesterday I finally sent back the acceptance letter! Starting September 7th I'll finally have a real, full-time job with benefits and everything! My goal is to end my current part-time job on the 13th of August, take a week off a

Back in the days of the Mac + I was really excited to learn to program for the thing. I couldn't find a compiler. That seemed crazy to me. For every computer I ever owned you could find languages and compilers galore. Dial up any BBS and download at will. The Mac? Zip, zero, zilch. The reason Apple is l

Apple never was an innovator... what they are though is a company that is good at taking under-appreciated/under-marketed concepts and putting that final bit of polish on them and packaging it all into one bundle. Apple tries to sell a one-stop-solution for the desktop, and the more features they bundle in the better. Now whether it's better to bundle in ISV apps, or to code it all up from scratch on their own is debatable. Who knows, the Apple vers

Umm... sir... I believe you have my stapler... I think I'll set the building on fire.... (Note of interest: There was no red swingline stapler when Office Space was made, they took a standard one and spray painted it red. Since the movie came out Swingline has received countless requests for the red model, which they didn't make. Finally, I think last year some time, they started offering the red one)

Note: I wrote this in a notebook while sitting in a hotel room in Rochester, IN this past Friday (6/25) after having driven 9hrs from central PA for a job interview. Some of the questions have been resolved/decided on since I wrote this and made another 9hr drive back home on Saturday. Today, I felt inspired by TV... yes, me, the guy who watches TV p

KG - That would have made Sex Ed a hell of a lot more effective... instead they like to try and avoid the messy issues and just talk about the biological facts of it, and the dangers of STDs... I don't think in any of my Sex Ed classes we ever talked really about the actual act, anything on how it's done, or the complications that one can encounter. There's also no real talk of the long-term consequences aside from STDs, they avoid the issue of teenag

Babies everywhere... friends IRL having babies, people I see online having babies... IT A BABY EPIDEMIC!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! It's like the first part of Village of the Damned... if they all start to exhibit glowing eyes, I'm finding the nearest bomb shelter and hiding out... On a serious note... very cute, I want one too! Now, to work out the necessary details... such as find girlfriend, then transform her into a wife, then the b

Not being a parent myself, I can't offer first-hand advice, but my best friend is a recent parent, and I was around a fair bit the first few months his daughter was alive, and at first she would wake up every 2hrs and be upset for no discernable reason... Needless to say my friend got 0 sleep for those first few months. They took her to the doctor thinking it was colic, doc just said it was what babies do when they're first born. After a few weeks it

I just got a job offer for my first job post-college. I'm 22, supposedly with all the world before me with nothing but opportunity and growth etc... I'm 22, I have a degree and now I have a job, but it still isn't any easier than it was when I was 21, in college and working part time. It's not that it is a depressing time, it's just that it's a different set of issues to deal with... and they're no better and no worse than the issues you deal with at

Very well said, and a difficult lesson learned. It is a tough one, I had to learn it the hard way too. Now I'm just sneakier, I still say the same sorts of things, I still vent when I need to and write about what I like... I just hide it from my RL friends. Poetmom, keep on blogging, it reall

Weblogs, refered to often simply as "Online Journals" (to avoid confusing the less technically literate among us) have become a huge craze in recent years as everyone and their brother, aunt, second cousin and dog have started to use them. Look around you in the average HS or Univ campus computer lab, or in the nearby netcafe, chances are a few people are either writ

I think the demand is there for older games, especially ones that are discontinued and completely unavailable (any old Interplay title for example). Publishers can't keep their older games on the shelves because space is at a premium... Classics of yesteryear, no matter how stellar, can't compete effectively with Doom 3 or Half Life 2... and publishers are looking for any way possible to queeze that last drop of cash out of the gaming audience, but th

It's a tough line to walk... you want to probably give your kid a name that is unique enough to stand apart from the rest and not be yet another Joe, Sam or Matt... but at the same time anything too weird will make the kid a target for a lot of ridicule in elementary and jr. high. I'm happy with my boring, common name... Michael.... it's my middle and last name that are odd and set me apart -Z

I don't think there is a maximum file size for game downloads... Look at people who pirate games nowadays, with some games ranking over 7gb, it doesn't stop them. I think the compromise is to offer games in both distribution formats, simply because there are people still on modems or people who want to have the physical box, manuals and CDs. If someone wants to purchase a game electronically and download it, size won't be a barrier to them i

They're part of the evil cabal that includes the sprites that sprinkle pseudo-sleeping dust on you that makes you think you're sleeping, but after 8 or 9 hours you wake up feeling just as dead as when you went to bed, with your eyes an bleery as they were before and the bags under your eyes larger... Yes, those sprites have been visiting me every night this week.
