Yup, just enable windows file sharing in the control panel and make sure everyone's on the same workgroup and subnet and you're good to go.

Usability is a very subjective thing if you've been using computers for any length of time. Whatever platform you're used to using, it becomes the "easy" and "user friendly" one and anything different is kludgy and confusing. I know people who think the command line interface is easy and the height of user friendly, that GUIs just complicate the whole mess by making you click through layer after layer of visual junk. Most computer saavy people I kno
There are certain unwritten, unspoken laws that every nerd, geek and dork must follow. To violate these laws is to deny a very essential part of our being. One of these laws involves Star Wars as a sacred and hallowed subject. If anything Star Wars comes out, we must see it. There is no room for argument. Sure Ep 1 and 2 sucked, and Ep 3 probably wont be much better (though the trailers definitely look better this time around), but we still have t
Actually you can get rid of tenured professors. You just have to be pretty damn careful about it. The only thing tenure protects you from is being punished for pursuing research that may be unpopular with the school administration or government (provided it doesn't break any laws). It is expected that you continue to publish and develop new ideas in your field at a fairly regular rate, if you slack too much on this, you can be canned. Also, with co
Yup, I use a 2-button PC mouse with my Powerbook. I hate the one-button thing Apple continues to push, but at least they give me the alternative finally
My problem was it was such a small and overly simplistic game when it could have been more. Like I said, this game would have been perfect if it was packaged and sold for what it was... a budget game good for some quick fun here and there, not the engrossing experience we now expect when we plop down $50 on a game. It had its moments of neatness, but there was nothing about this game that really makes it stand out. It was pretty average across the b
Yeah, the gaming thing is what keeps me glued to the Windows platform... though at least companies like Blizzard release for both platforms simultaneously. I play WoW on my powerbook whenever I travel now, it's great
How does a 32mb graphics card impact this sort of computer? It's not going to be a gaming rig, it's not supposed to be. It's a computer at a budget price-point aimed at the nonhardcore computer user. And you can upgrade the RAM to a full gig. Most of the default Macs come with too little memory so you have to pop some in anyway. This is big because it brings the Mac to a price that the average person can afford. Heck, it's so cheap now it
Continuing on in the only thread of entries that seems to garner any real interest... another game review! :) Pirates! by Firaxis Ok, this is a remake of what is considered to be one of the classics of PC gaming. Sid Meier is one of those icons of the PC game industry whose name is whispered in hushed tones of reverence and placed along side other
I'm nearing the end of KOTOR2 now and I've encountered a few bugs that required me to fall back to previous saves, some at the start of an area because I got a bug at the end of it. Got trapped in the tomb on Korriban for some reason after defeating the last ghost... had to reload from the start of the area... very frustrating I've noticed a few consistency bugs too in conversations: 1) You get to decide at the start of the game what Rev
That's sort of like saying a reasonable conservative is a moderate republican. It's an over-simplification of an entire half of the political spectrum. You can be reasonable and be a fair bit off of center on either side. The difference between the reasonable and the extreme are the manner in which they reach their conclusions and how they react to opposing views. I know many people who are very very liberal but entirely reasonable about it. They
In my mind the difference is.. Economic Liberal - Spend money on social programs like welfare, social security, food stamps etc... This is the camp that very much pushes for big government to catch those that fall through the cracks (at times regardless of why they fell through). I lump Affirmative Action in this category as it's largely an economic initiative. Social Liberal - Pushes more for personal freedoms in personal choices. Pro-
Yesterday was the kick-off of the annual MacWorld Expo. As is tradition, Apple Guru Steve Jobs starts it off with a keynote speech talking about many things Mac-related, with the most anticipated part being the announcement of new products for the upcoming year. In 2001 we saw the iPod and iTunes explode onto the market, taking the MP3 market by storm. 2002 was the
I actually have the red swingline stapler Good to see I'm not the only one who thinks that some of the games you have to play in the workforce are a load of crap... too bad we still have to play them huh? Oh, and I wish managers and executives would realize that most of the morale boosting, or other feel-good initiatives are really just a waste of everyones time and an
I often forget that my style of humor (dry) often doesn't go over well with others. Many miss the joke or the humor and think I'm either being serious or disrespectful. This is a problem I've had to grapple with my entire life as I encountered new people in school, and now in the workforce. Well, last week we had some rather nasty weather here in New Englan
I've been verbally torn to shreds for daring to hold doors open for women before. Hey, sorry bitch but I hold them open for EVERYONE. These women are the same ones in many cases who cry over the fact that men don't treat them well anymore. How the heck are we supposed to treat you? Can't be nice to you because that's condescending... can't be mean to you cause that's abuse... and if we're just "blah" to you, you'll think we're disinterested. It's
My favorite prank I ever did in college was to take my roommate's room, and rotate it 90 degrees (i.e. shift everything one wall over). Slightly more subtle would be to move every object in their room half a foot to one side.
Alright, I've been given a project at work to take a project management process (how to scale down our massive project methodology to fit projects of varrying sizes) and build an automated tool that asks a Project Manager a series of questions about their project, and spits out an evaluation and set of suggestions as to how best scale the methodology. It should also
I had this rather long and eloquent (at least I thought so) response picking apart the whole argument of what is and isn't weird when I realized that most of the post was just there to get the readers mind in gear for the real point of the article The less you know about someone or some group of people the more likely yo
It's ok just so long as he NEVER finds out about it. I know I would have murdered my parents if I ever found out they did something like this to me
Man, I wish you came over to my little island paradise so i can introduce you to all my friends. We like shy people because we're all shy too This is the ultimate catch-22... shy people tend to go for other shy people. But, how do shy people meet one another? This is one I'm still trying to figure
I gotta say, JU so far has been the best blog site I've used in recent memory. Sure it's had downtime, bugs, formatting issues etc... but 1) it's free 2) the community (for the most part) is excellent) and 3) I've seen nothing but continual improvement. This is probably one of the few web-based services out there that I would consider paying for to get "enhanced" features. I can't wait to see the changes as they are rolled out in the next f
Same to you Brad, and the rest of the JU community!
This is probably something that would have been better dealt with in an email or a phone call, and not on a public forum. I speak this from personal experience, watching friends fall into huge fights over something someone posted on a blog. If you still want to use JU as a personal message board with your friends, I'd suggest using the blog group feature... it'll keep it semi-private enough for your needs. The golden rule of posting online..
So now we need to take each student on a case-by-case basis and create a custom reading list for each of them based on their family history, religious beliefs and personal philosophies? I'm sorry, that doesn't fly. One of the first lessons everyone needs to learn in college is that you are not a special case anymore, that the harsh world outside of your parents house doesn't give a rats ass who you are or what your family does and will not treat yo
