Hmm, I read the other thread, but still not convinced it's the number of times declared war, neither Larsenex's suggestions about invading minors. In that game I didn't declare war towards anybody, as I was locked in the Drengin war according to the campaign. I don't remember fighting any minors. I'm more inclined to go with the backstory related, at least for this game. Curiouser and curiouser!

I did search but found nothing on the subject. Still conflicting information around. I will try the different thing suggested to see if I get it in a skirmish/sandbox game instead of the campaign.

Just spotted this yesterday: "You know what you did" relation modifier with the Thalans. I don't quite remember what I did :P It was while playing the campaign, so I was wondering if it has something to do with the backstory (Thalans coming to prevent the crusade)。 I don't remember seeing it during normal play. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=609881824

It's actually a Yor that does the manufacturing. As in the whole building is a Yor. In that way it's a manufacturing Yor.

you can stick with the higher resolution and change the size of the text and, icons http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/make-text-screen-larger-smaller/?v=t

It's possible that the resolution you were using before in the desktop was not the optimal one. So your icons and text would look slightly blurry. The ratio of the 1600 to 1280 is 1.25 but 1250 to 960 is 1.33, so you might have not noticed it was set at the wrong resolution! You can go back and check with 1600x1250 and see which one is clearer. You can check your monitor's settings/manual to see which one is the optimal one.

There's an easy to way to do it: Unanchor your shipyard and send it to the position you want to measure. It's so slow you will only change its position by one tile, but it will show you how many turns it will take to go to the new position. Since it moves at 1 tile per turn, the number is equal to the distance you want :). Of course this will only work if the two tiles you want to measure are from the shipyard. If it's elsewhere then, no!

I think the main thing is that you have just started playing. Play a bit more if you fancy and enjoy it. In the absence of in-game tutorial videos teaching the basics I direct you to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiMTibbm8lE It was made by makers of the game and explains the basics. Hope it's useful :)

Stacking engines or components is an entirely different discussion. To be honest I like stacking engines. I don't like slow ships. I usually use 2-3 ion drives and stop there. If I decide late game I want superfast ships I will stack warp drives. It's a game, you need the option at the very least. Why should I stick with slow ships?

Ok, briefly: I suggest you make sure you play on the easiest difficulty. Then, you should ignore the ship roles, or sub-types as you called them. Only focus on the attack and defense rating of your ships. Then, if you didn't know already there are three attack weapons: beam, missile and kinetic. Correspondingly, there are three defense types: shields, ECM and armour. The shields defend against beam weapons, ECM against missiles and armour against kinetic. Mak

Explainer: "The metaverse will be unavailable until it's upgraded to support the expansion."* Sounds good to me :P *Never actually stated.
