Given I've never played MP I don't think I can give a good prediction. However, I expect that in the Pros v Cons that many reviews do that the lack of tactical combat will get a fair bit of mention in the "Cons" section, if only due to the fact a couple of recent space 4X have had it.

I agree that it is a bit clunky. There are a couple of things that should be done to the designer to make it an easier tool to use. However, I wouldn't say it was unintuitive, but rather that it tries to give you as much freedom in design as possible by giving you a blank slate. The devs have not avoided the question of espionage and have been clear about it for almost a year now. Espionage will not be in the base game. It will be added in an expansion, likely coupled with Fleet/ship commanders. Survey ships are now armed at the start and their point is like all pirates/barbarians in similar games is to hamper and harass you in the early stages. Maybe I'm misremembering GC2 but when you clicked on a part on a design and then back on the same part in the part list didn't it give you that part matching the settings of the part already used and not just the default? I'd like to see that back or some quick and easy way to copy a part you've placed that isn't using the symmetry command since that comes with its own issues.

Haven't really had a chance to make anything new yet with Beta 5, so I've been playing with the ship colour themes. Here is my missile cruise with I think Inverted Steel as the theme. Really liking it. If you make your design a template you can access the design in subsequent games regardless of what research paths you choose.
Noticed two things in a quick play with Beta 5. 1.When selecting the shipyard which is building the ship as its rally point it still spits the newly build ship out and sets it to idle. 2. After a starbase is destroyed the lines that connect to the resources being mined by the starbase remain leading back to the hex where the starbase used to be. I'm not sure I necessary buy that excuse. I'm more inclined to suspect that it's more of a case that time is running out before launch and they're going for the easier solution, which is to take away control from the player and put in set parameters. Shouldn't really be too upset about this though. In terms of the game as a whole there are far more important aspects that need completing and fixing.
It's probably the aspect of the carriers I'm most disappointed with. I remember at least once in the dev stream that the idea that we could set what fighters were used was mooted by Paul and I hope that they do add this. It would also be interesting to see how the battles balance out if you could set your carrier fighters up to be guardians rather than interceptors.

There's a super-thread for all ship designs here to stop us ship designers from taking over the place. If you want to shortcut to all tech open up the console (~) and type "unlock" and that will give you all the techs. It will save you having to grind through turns just to get the big hulls when all you want to do is play with the designer.
Only just noticed this today, but some of our ships from this thread are getting used to promote the ship designing aspect on the Steam store page, which is pretty cool. Or at least I'm assuming they are using the images from this thread given they used my forum name and not my steam id. Link to the store page.
