good points. I would add that you can simply limit the number of sensors allowed on a ship... lets say 4.... and the more powerful sensors need Elerium or something like that. Then you can have a dedicated starbase - sensor array,,, It will map out all the assets which moved that turn in a huge area but it won't give you visual or any information toward whom it belongs or what it is.

I am still on the version before mercenaries, and from time to time i have not been allowed to attack something but it is very rare. There was even one pirate defended anomaly which i was not allowed to attack.... it gave me the usual option if i want to attack or not, i say yes,,,, then nothing? I tried again next turn, same thing again.

Thanks for all the posts guys, its appreciated. As it happens, i did manage to get a pretty good map! I have a small cluster of planets far away from the others all to myself. It is not a brilliant cluster of planets by any stretch of the imagination, but it is useful enough, and that's all i ever wanted. There are a couple of nice things for the early game.... i got the speed trade good on Earth!, plus i got a 50% scien

9 is very interesting.... Isn't the AI coded to consider diplomacy whenever a planet is lost/gained ? or is that another game i am thinking of? Anyway, you could simply attach that same coding to the star base which provoked the skirmish? 12.... AI's sending colony....
I once got a start where I had 10+ Star systems with 3 earthlike planets in each. yeah. I just fainted from joy. Was an incredible start. And it also had five precursor worlds that I nabbed. Needless to say my manufacturing was incredible in that game.
If you can get a brilliant series of planets in a relatively small star cluster, that is the holy grail!
I'm not thinking 'realism' I'm thinking "reduce the micromanagement." Seriously, the yor used to be my favorite race in galciv 2 because you could just plop down one economic building per planet and focus on spamming ships after that. Now you need to micromanage the growth of every single planet and it doubles the number of things you need to do to prepare a planetary invasion.
Also set them so that they are unwilling to trade any techs. The bigger question is how to make them so they do not initiate war UNTIL someone crosses into "their" territory. but also they should have territory Set them up so they spawn

I am also a long time fan of Galciv games and i recently tarted playing Galciv 3 last couple of months. I have observed a couple of things why the AI is not performing well, but the main one by far is ship range. I do not recall ship range being such a big issue in Galciv2 like it is in Galciv 3? Range is a good game aspect, but can we really expect an AI to understand it as well as the player? The other big AI weakness is targeting priority.....

Perhaps they are mostly getting scooped up by AI's now before I find them?
Well yes, the AI knows where all the anomalies are without exploring, and they will prioritize the anomalies near your territory first, above the ones near them..... why else do you think you see so many anomalie

It'd need a new mechanic to limit growth, and also still show they are a threat to other races so they don't get in wars where they just wipe others out (often anyway). Perhaps they have a dying, leaving or ascending population, and a 'fear' or '
Its moddable
If its moddable, somebody has probably already done it? A super race that mostly stays out of it, just lets you play a normal game, then when the normal game runs its course and starts getting boring, you have something very interesting in reserve to sink your teeth into..... i would call that a BRILLIANT idea!

Hmm, well this whole debate over how rare they should be is irrelevant. Because that is the whole point of having the abundance settings, so people can chose for themselves.... so fix it! If someone wants so much of something that its just absurd, then let them have it, let them play their game thinking how crazy it is there are so many.... and next time they might turn it down a bit.... what is wrong with that? you tell me?

You know what, its not such a bad idea,,,, but what i think would be even better.... have a race like say the Vorlon from Babylon five. They will keep to themselves but woe be told anyone who enters their territory! It would be like the cherry on top at the end of a long hard game for the player to test out all their hard earn't tech and ships instead of just abandoning all that hard work when the challenge is gone, like you normally have to in this game.

The last number i saw was 6 7) Combat may be more interesting than in GC2, but i also think it is too easy to avoid losses. What i think will help the AI is to bring back some degree of crossover defense. What i personally think would be more fun is to have shield defense only, but have 3 shield types, each one is especially effective against one type of attack, but also does work a little bit against the others. That seems much more realistic to me..... and the visual
