I already posted the idea before, but I did not explain the possible benefits for stardock, to develop GalCiv in MMO format.
1) First and foremost: if you want to make the most out of the LUDICROUS map sizes, MMO would be it. Those map sizes are the trump card of GalCiv and Stardock would only gain, if it played a little on it. I mean - show me another multiplayer sandbox experience with such magnitude and depth, I am all ears. The very possibility, the sandbox itself - that allows 100+ players - invites the MMO format.
The players even do not have to have great gaming computers to participate as all calculations must be made by Stardock servers that run those LUDICROUS maps.
2) Strenghten the fanbase. There would be hardcore veterans who would play MMO format only, for long period of time. These people would help: a) Maintain GalCiv franchise alive, make sure its something everybody talks about
directly or indirectly, help to develop the game.
3) Make your cashpile bigger. Indeed, there would be lots of people who would pay for MMO experience. Firstly, by purchasing the original game that is a must to play MMO on your server. Secondly, by paying the costs to maintain/upgrade Stardocks servers. The play could be for free, but say a player wants something customized, wants to be recognized, identified somehow. Then he must pay some $$ to Stardock.
I know its early yet because you have to balance the game and erase all the possible bugs before GalCiv MMO could start, but still, I would love to hear some comments from the devs if there is any chance whatsoever to see GalCiv in MMO.
