GalCiv 2 Ultimate Edition Community Update

GalCiv 2 Ultimate Edition Community Update

is now on GOG and Steam! :)

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/x2y0vtszretrook/AADTKT6lhp0Qhns8B7LkfJvaa?lst=

Project origins

There was some discussion on the Steam forums as to how to get an update to GalCiv 2 out there.

Draginol popped in and suggested that an update incorporating the expertise of the fanbase would be the best way forward.  A bugfixing update would soon be on the way.

I sent a message to the other tech tree modders, and luckily secured the assistance of Gaunathor, and later MabusAltarn, as well as some dedicated members of the community who posted some valuable feedback.  They have been instrumental to the success of the community update, and I'm glad to have played a small part along the way.

Progress report

The community update has been released as part of a rollout of Stardock products on GOG.com and is also available as an opt-in beta on Steam!

I'm currently playing TotA 2.20 Metaverse: all races still use the old political parties. The corresponding MetaverseData-folder in Twilight doesn't include a PoliticalParties.xml so the game refers back to the vanilla-MetaverseData-folder.

The last download of changes by Gaunathor which I can access actually fixes that so I hope SD will get back to release an update (and I really want to use proper farms again)

BTW I kinda think some races are really screwed on mining resources, I just made a list and some (eg. Korx) can mine up to 50% while others only 20% 21%. For MV that has a tremendous impact on score, because an Immense galaxy holds roundabout 25 resource crystals where 4 types (research, morale, economics & military) directly translate into score. Being nerfed from 60% (Tota 20.42) to 20% is like a loss of up to +1000% of racial stats  X(

Curiouser and curiouser.   The recent 2.20 non-Steam release is a strange animal.  No launcher, DA but no icon for it, and AFAICT no Dread Lords at all.

Except for using the same data folder, the installation seems completely separate from the Steam/previous standalone installations. Is there a philosophy at work here?

Don't get me wrong, I would more than welcome a truly separate installation.  But it only half does that.

Is the Steam release of 2.20 any different?

Look at Maiden666 recent thread on how MV calculates score.

This is strange, I got a different experience.

Are we talking about the same file named GalCiv2_UltimateEdition_2.20.exe downloaded from the Stardock Account?

That install created a folder in C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\GalCiv2 containing 9.346 files @ 2.09 GB size.

No launcher, also no activation, but all 3 game versions are included.

GalCiv2.exe

DarkAvatar\GC2DarkAvatar.exe

Twilight\GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe

is that different from yours?

I'm currently writing a detailed standalone post on this but I'm afraif it won't help that much since it'll be dry mathematical stuff.

Which is not really that important knowledge because all a MV player needs to know is just to increase 4 basic ingame things, and as fast & as high as possible.

Your problem is that you're NOT winning fast enough. Some of your game last even longer than 10 years, which is 480 turns. :S :P

You need win faster - much faster. Make all your planets have 15b-20b people. I'm talking about ~750 planets so your galactic population is somewhere near 10 trillion people.

Then build Stock Markets on every free tile that is still available. You should have a taxincome of 1 million bcs per turn or more.

Then build as many Dreadnoughts that you can get, but not the designs which is offered by the game - design your own ones, using ZPA they should have +1 Attack & +280 Defense. You can build up to 100.000 but I'd say try 5000 for starters. And only lease-buy the empty Huge Hull & once you have 5000 upgrade them all to this +1/+280 design which will net you an immense military score.

As you can see all of these methods for acquiring score has nothing to do with ordinairy "fun" gameplay, it's just cheesy grinding. That's why playing ZYWs is so nice, in stark contrast these games can be played very fast & still net decent score even without maxing all the above mentioned ;)

You're right. DL is there.  Missed it.  No icon, though.

Found a glitch/typo in UPIssues.xml

<UPIssue InternalName="NeutralZones">
<Question>The foreign buildup of forces before declaring war is a dishonorable and cowardly tactic. By allowing this 'strategy' to be used, we're actively planting the seeds of suspicion and distrust amongst our neighbors.\nWe [sic!] come together today to fight for a more trustworthy community. Following a declaration of war, all active warships on both sides will be forced into non-aggressive territory. The use of neutral ground will prevent the surprise attacks that too often follow the buildup of troops.</Question>

sorry if this has already reported but I didn't find it mentioned in the last changelog.txt

and that one

<UPIssue InternalName="UnitedCelebration01">
<Question>Much like the people of the [YourEmpireName], citizens around the galaxy grow weary of life in the shadow of war. To ease their spirits, each civilization is being asked to contribute money towards a 'United Celebration', which will boost their morale for the next year.</Question>

is a bit misleading. In fact, the benefit will be an approval-bonus (I just realize how strong this is  :omg:  :erk: )

I'm currently playing a suicidal all-abundant galaxy in dread lords. It's turn 50 and I managed to colonize ~380 planets. And that is not really a strong game, more a type to test different things out. :-"

such a game takes several hundreds hours to play and is also very boring, its basically just leasebuying stock markets, fleeting ships together & waiting minutes, sometimes hours until the game is done processing shipsmovement.

how could I possibly make a video from this?

the only interesting thing is the amount of score at its end

hello my friend,, let me ask you another question, if you dont mind.   I have won a game here and my military was 10 times the oponent , i killed many more of their ships ,, but my final pontuation is much lower than theirs,,, do you know what could be the reason?  I built better ships, more ships, killed more oponents, invaded many planets and still my points are lower than his, much lower...

this pointing system of GC2 is confusing for me,

thanks

If you can post 4 screenshots detailing all Military, Population, Economy & Research-curves (Civ-Manager-->Timeline-->Show all: first 4 curves)... this is essentially were you can see how your score (and the one of your opponents) did develop.

cool,,, I will try to do that tomorow,, my computer is quite new, i need to find where is the screen shot, once i find i sent you the images,,, thanks..

Hello, I just saw the 2.20 update today and bought the ultimate edition on steam. Thank you guys for providing the community updates. I have read this thread and i see that there are new update to the 2.20 version. Is there any news that when this new update will be applied to the game by stardock?

Thanks.

hi,, new update for the 2.20 version???  let me know any info,, i dont know any thing about it,...

GC 2 is cool game,,  could have been better..

we also play on metaverse,, go there with us..

Reportedly, 2.21 has been delivered to Stardock.  The developers need to do a full build before the release (and may also do some internal tweaks).  No firm schedule yet.  From what I've observed here, it won't be much different from 2.20, so don't get too militant about it.  ;)

You can get all the medals? :)

If I play a Metaverse game it'll just be for funsies.

I've no clue if that's somehow humanly possible. The basic problem here is that it hasn't officially been released how each of them is actually achieved. At least one of them - Wounded in Action - doesn't show up on the forums (but it will show on the resp. MV profile), and I've never seen a single one of some of the other groups like for excessive forum potings etc.

Maybe the 750 battles or 1000 battles will show, at least, the 250 and 500 do indeed show. But in order to find that out would require massive amounts of time, for something which, well, noone really cares these days...

Nevertheless, IF Stardock would give out some infos into how to acquire some of the yet unknown medals (and if this can be reached via submitting games^^) I would definitely consider going for them^^ but I suspect even at Stardock they've long forgotten about it :)
