GalCiv 2 Ultimate Edition Community Update

GalCiv 2 Ultimate Edition Community Update

is now on GOG and Steam! :)

Project origins

There was some discussion on the Steam forums as to how to get an update to GalCiv 2 out there.

Draginol popped in and suggested that an update incorporating the expertise of the fanbase would be the best way forward.  A bugfixing update would soon be on the way.

I sent a message to the other tech tree modders, and luckily secured the assistance of Gaunathor, and later MabusAltarn, as well as some dedicated members of the community who posted some valuable feedback.  They have been instrumental to the success of the community update, and I'm glad to have played a small part along the way.

Progress report

The community update has been released as part of a rollout of Stardock products on GOG.com and is also available as an opt-in beta on Steam!

Two question, please.

1) How do I re-enable the Planets panel on the negotiation screen?

2) Is it possible to have two functioning versions on the same computer?  e.g. 2.04 and 2.20.  Separate installations are easy, but they both insist on using the same folder for dynamic files.

2. Yes stardock will have two folders. Each folder requires a separate icon on the desktop.

Willy, please re-read my question.  Then think about it before replying.

End of DMF's quote

The file responsible for the outlay of the "negotiation screen" is called "TradeWnd.dxpack". Simply search for it in your 2.20 installation & overwrite it with the old one (which you take from the 2.04 version)

As for 2 separate personal folder - I think you'll have to do work with 2 separate backup-folders - which you copy into the used one, and backup these folder every time you change your version....

I think i will install the older versions ,,,

I can only get 20 000 points in a match,,, my record was 32 000

I don't know that this is CU-related, but I am playing 2.20 so I'll ask here.

I was playing with initial setups: selected a set of opponents, set one (maybe more) to 'Friendly'.

Done with that, started a new game and selected Random/Random.  About half the opponents I got were Friendly.  Happened again, but different Friendlies.  So I went back to the setup and manually set all opponents to 'Unknown'.  Yet I still get Friendlies.  How do I get rid of the little buggers?

the tendency is that oponets are friendly, unless u choose korath and dreguin,,,, they start as friendly,,,, but later they declare war if their level is tough,, if u play level normal,, they wont be hostile..

it all depends on the level... if u choose harder level they wont be friendly,,, they may start as friendly since they dont know u...

wha tplayer do u play?? yors ,?? terrans?? torians??

i love the music game play, i wonder where have they find the music..??

I was setting up Drath at Suicidal.

I finally got the buggers reset, I think, though I'm not sure how.  It may have had to do with resetting manually, then quitting the app and restarting.

The only random options in the last screens are

"number of opponents"

"intelligence"

both have 0 to do with "relations"

If you manually set relations to "unknown" you won't see that AI in the diplomacy screen and on first encounter, it'll default to "neutral". However, because you set "number of opponents" to random, you actually have no control if these AIs are even present in your game.

I understand that, but I think you're missing the point.  I set one (maybe a few) specific opponents to Friendly. Then I switched back to Random#.  GC generated a random set of opponents, but they were also randomly set to Friendly.  The one(s) I set might not show up, but when they did they might or might not be set to Friendly.

IMO, given the existing interface, with Random# no opponent should show up with a pre-selected relationship.  Since it's working that way now it's probably not worth pursuing.

[OTOH, it might be nice if I could pre-select a friend (or enemy) then have the app fill in more opponents randomly...]

I managed to get 30 000 points, in one game ,, I am yet to increase pontuation, but is not easy.

hmmm, well I tried to re-create things from Reply#1709, but got a complete different experience.

Relationship is stored in prefs.ini, and actually applies to the slot. Now if you manually de-select any enemy, it goes back into the pool to the right which will also set its relation to "unknown". Thus, any new enemy will also have his relation set to default "unknown".

Randomizing opponents seems to screw that. The game will randomly pick any enemy but the relation will stay as it was before. For example, if I manually picked 9 opponents, set all relations to "friendly", then randomized opponents, I will 100% end up with 9 enemies set to friendly, though it might not be the one I manually filled into the slots.

That is, there seems to be no way to randomize relations as well. You either set all relations to "unknown" for all slots before you randomize, or you give some slots different relations and then randomize, you'll then already know the number & full scope of all relations, but you won't know which whom it finally will be (although you'll see it right on Turn1 except if it's "unknown")

13 years!!  I don't think I'd have that much patience.

Nice to see how you're progressing.

Ah.  That makes sense.  There may have been a slot correlation that I missed.

Thanks.

indeed,, some games i played lasted more than 20 years,,,, it took around 7 hours to finish one game,, but that was a few years ago,,, now I play shorter games,,,

i cant win on mazochistic ,,, I found it very hard..

the shortes t ime i finished a game was 3 years,,, on easiers levels..

Just curious did you try maxing out everyone to be the most militaristic on the personality section.

Are you thinking that they would kill each other off?

??? what  do u mean?  maxing it out???

even if they kill each other off,,  you need to win fast to win points,,, i have used this tactic many times,, makes them fight and get an alliance victory...

now if u thick all victory conditions off , they you have to destroy or conquer the other races,,,

I would be happy to see a zero hour game victory on a youtube video,,, i  could never make it,,, win in zero year,s  i take several years just to lcoate the enemy position,,, then several years to research all tech for wepons, ships and tillings,,, then many years to build advaanced ships and take their world...

I can win on average of 5 years on normal level,,, the harder the level takes more time,,

if you wanna conquering suicidal in a conventional warfighting game, it's a valid tactic to send the AI into warfare with each other... it's keeping their military down... you see, on suicidal all AI will speed ahead of you technologically & militarily, so basically the only way to compensate that is to socialize up & develop planets to optimal standars (which is something the AI isn't good at) but that requires some time so in the meanwhile throw them into wars.
