The main GRM mod is required to utilize the races. However, much of the mod is modular and all other mod folders other than GRM could be removed. 1) that is "intended" originally cargo ships were just a tad larger than medium. This can be modded though. (I have in GRM) forget exactly which file, but it is pretty simple to do.

Not as such. This is the most efficient method... 1) Create a generic model for the generic unspecified core of a Starbase. 2) Create the full level 5 version of the starbase you want (econ lets say) 3) Remove components to produce the level 4 model. Then repeat to create the level 3 model... etc. If you don't care about the visible progression of starbases being upgraded... you can just skip step 2 and use the same model for all levels.

"I'm not sure how many players will think of using shift to select multiple ships," I think using shift-click to select multiple units is probably the most natural choice. In order to select multiple files on a desktop for example, one uses shift click... additionally most RTS games I've played also utilize this behavior. Correct, but it is possible GRM will work (somewhat) in the default game. 1) Install GRM's "My Document" content. Do not install the "For your game directory" content. 2) Go into the Mods folder... remove all GRM folders except GRM itself...
