Is there an easy way to make the grayscale map at all?? I have a shape in photoshop, how do I create a map from it?? (the only way I know how is painstaking and bothersome)

OK, I just made my first WMP skin (RubberSkin), and I'm happy with it, but I have a problem: the custom slider I tried to make really stank, and on top of that, it took me at least a day and a half working on it to finally get it to work. I finally decided to just ditch it and use + and - buttons for volume. Anyway, does anyone know an easy way to make a custom slider?? I can make the background images, it is just the grayscale map that I have trouble with.
