"Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. If I understand correctly, MS is obligated to their partners (hardware) to release a new OS every 2.5 years. It's important for the packagers to encourage hardware upgrades for the obvious reason. However, Vista did not offer patrons (business) enough of an incentive to increase the cost/benefit ratio.
