I belive the planet pictures are 100% determined by planet quality. To confirm, watch the pictures changes as you build soil enhancement, habitat improvmeent, etc. Below PQ 20, there's a different picture for each value. At higher values, the picture doesn't change as often.

I think it can also happen if the mini-freighter's path is blocked. Here's another way it can happen. Have 2 stars with only 1 square between them. A trade route between those two stars has a value of zero.

Actually, I like basegolf the best of the new games. Disciples II just isn't fun. You can only cast spells in the main map. The UI is confusing. If I want to have a unit stay in the same place for a few turns, I have to hit "guard" every single turn. Empires also isn't fun. The "revolving 30 day blocks" rule seemed counterintuitive to me. I thought it should be fixed 30 day blocks, starting from your first submission. This way, you won't have the "increasing/decreasing" score effect as much.
