I quite enjoyed the research mechanic in MOO2 where you had to choose a tech making you, consequently, lose others. I wouldn't make it so drastic with galciv3, yet I would love to see them implement something of the sort. Perhaps making a few branches as race specialties once said branches are chosen. Other research could be chosen, yet may be slower as a result of another already researched and delved into. Having the race making discoveries geared from that rout

The best thing about building your own ships in galciv2 was that it saved your designs for later use in other games.

That, and Stardock's mia culpa regarding Elemental. Their history with games and of making them, particularly with the galciv series, have more than earned my trust.
Quoting chuck1es, reply 75 Wouldn't galciv3 still be a strategy game even if we had dancing bears instead of ships?!? Yes, but there is a difference between strategy game and tactical game.
?!? Reply is odd...

Endless Space actually did the hero thing quite well, I think. Had both governers and admirals. They started off with differing traits that were random, and each trait could be leveled up as the game progressed. I kind of got the idea of heros, or some such, becoming a factor in galciv3 because of the emphasis placed on names in the story boards (DATABANKS).

That would be some sort o' super defense for the planet, too. Though I would think building something like that would really detract from fleet resources and leave ya fairly vulnerable to someone else that's fleetin' up.

Actually, I'd be more happy with the "movie combat" if the weapons equipped actually mattered and were distinct. Lasers, projectiles and missiles have the same engagement envelope with roughly the same characteristics. Meant I honestly didn't care which direction my weapons research went. There was no need to care. Pulled me out of the game's immersion.
While I dont have the money to buy the 100$ version, I am however pre ordering the basic one, despite my rule of never pre-ordering (Simcity fiasco hurt after 80$), I will only do this because its stardock, best PR ever, and great corporation behavior, I know it will be a great game, and if not, they would fix it, I trust them enough. Something I do not feel for most game companies.
Amen. I pre-ordere

Having a more hands-on approach with battles will in no way detract from the game being a strategy game. Planetary invasions can still be much more interactive and still be strategic instead of tactical. Instead of controlling troops or squads like some sort o' RTS, instead be able to determine which improvements, etc., that you'll invade. Dependent upon what you haven't smoked from above. Could be one, two or all. The defending player can choose which they

It seems to be the only thing they're good at, because running the country is clearly not something they're good at. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.
Windows 7.

I caught that, too. I had mentioned it earlier and the responses seemed to settle the matter of the actual game being included. Just weird wording. They need a proofer or somethin'. :P

I looked at it, flipped a mental coin about the safety of it and downloaded it anyway. Then Windows and my protections got pissy with me about it. You got keyloggers in there? Tryin' to break into my bank account? 'Cause, I gotta tell ya, I could use the help with bills. We could do a joint account if you want.

I barely remember playing Star Control. But it's you guys so I'll probably buy without needing to consider. I'll replay 'em for a day and then come back and yell atcha 'bout what I want and what the game should most definitely have. Which, really, is the only reason I come to these forums. ;)

Egads, Endless Space... I play that game off and on. I think my biggest beef with it (I made peace with the card idea before purchasing) is that using AUTO is a no-go simply because I would take much more damage and lose more ships with it where in MANUAL I wouldn't lose one ship, take much damage and destroy the enemy fleet in the process. Choosing the same options, etc., doesn't provide the same results.

Starbases do stack in galciv2. I think it stopped at a certain point, though. Never needed to test it out. Maybe have 'em act as a production outpost like in SoSE. Make 'em much more expensive and multi-useful as a result. I dunno. Honestly, the only thing that really bothered me with 'em was the amount the AI's would create and where they were placed.

Umm...I don't think I've read anything official from Frogboy about multiplayer but others had spoken of it as if it had been confirmed and ol' Froggy hadn't stepped in to deny it.

10 Years Have Passed - " The Arcean home world has been sterilized by massive Drengin orbital bombardment The Korx are gone." There needs to be a period between "bombardment" and "The Korx are gone.". Making it, "The Arcean home world has been sterilized by massive Drengin orbital bombardment. The Korx are gone."

The Drengin Menace - "...and their willingness to use that capability far more ruthless fashion than the Drengin thought possible." Should probably read, "and their willingness to use that capability in a far more ruthless fashion than the Drengin thought possible."

I got her to play some games, she'll watch me play others. She can't stand strategy games, though. It's fun watching her freak out watching me play horror games. She's a bad side-seat player.
