I had lots of hope for UFO Aftermath as a successor to X-com, but sadly they went realtime with pause, with combat (the wave of the future yay), and the graphics are really poor :( will we ever get a worthy X-com successor? don't understand the frenzy about Half-Life 2 or doom3. a level based FPS with scripted sequences? meh... can't get excited. the 'Evil Genius' game I read about the other day sounds much more interesting. multiplayer stalker too

I suspect there is a lot of 'self-censorship' going on in the US due to market consideration and the ubiquitous political correctness pressures. doesn't make any difference to me - the result is the same - censorship. there is this old violence vs. sex battle where extereme violence (esp. towards the 'bad guys') is premissable whereas as much as a nekkid nipple can get you an M rating (and lower your sales). while I'm critical of censorship, I do draw lines that I personally

in my exprience GalCiv is the first 4x game where I have to try hard to win by outgunning everyone, and cultural and diplomatical victories come more naturally. an example of 'simpler rules -> more complexity'? as much as I love Moo2, even there games was heavily bent on combat, even the phsycotic AI encouraged it. Moo3, I think (only played for one week - waiting for the code patch), even more so... normally I wouldn't mind it, if it was presented and implemented competent

I've seen it once too, one patch release back. I actually bought 2 colony ships from General Manufacturing (?; the first leasing option). 2 turns later and still no ships. but my balance went -$700. it happened on the 20th turn or so of the game. haven't seen this problem since. :notsure:

couldn't get into Moo3. been a long time Moo2 fan. not bashing anything, just genuenly upset. IMHO and all that. Amazon.com? well, Moo2 is still at 5 stars out there and it's been what? 6 years? says at least something, I'm sure. I do believe lots of fans were genuenly dissapointed. not just trolling random review sites. I agree with whomever said it above, these talks are okay as long as we don't put each other down. as it helps us to understand what makes a better T

I like the idea of following all of which has been expressed before... - max SBs tied to some other independent variable (tech, number of planets, pop) - mutually exclusive, or interfering module upgrade trees to make you really pick and choose - law of diminishing returns for bonuses as in every other aspect of the game (don't stack bonuses in a sector) - constructors more expensive/advanced constructor tech - some sort of 'zone of control' for starbases, i.e. can't b

I've got to admit I crave tactical style combat sometimes during important battles. if I could see my Dreadnaught in all its glory with turrets turning, and beacons blinking, beams firing, ahhhh :) it was just sort of a fun intermission in the turn to turn flow of the strategic game. a cool thing would also be individual leaders with bonuses that you could assign to armadas, or ships, or planets (like in Moo2). it just makes you care about a special ship/fleet more, gives it

howdy, - the only 'official free expansion' I know of is the June expansion with totally new stuff including art; lots of stuff gets taken care of in the frequent updates which are free of course including AI tweaks; the game was playable and enterntaining right out-of-the box for me, they are going the extra mile - they are working on the Demo, AFAIK. should be out soon, (this month?) - search for SMAC on this board, you'll some pretty good in-depth comparisons - re: the AI

I think they meant the original System Shock. back in its time it was a revolutionary first person game, out of the ordinary, addictive, pretty much like every Origin/LG's game back then. MoM is a classic that is still played. both were pretty much 'niche' games. so, there's the parallel. don't miss out on GalCiv :)

Disciples II was lots of fun, great artwork, kinda spooky. 4 different playstyles (races). highly addictive. recommended. 2 add-ons are in the pipeline. MoM2 (how 'bout it Stardock ;p ?) = drool (esp. with a challenging AI) the upcoming Warlords VI (not the RTS Battlecry one) looks promising a worthy X-Com sequel would be sweet too (not really TB strategy, but still...)

well, I used to be of the same opinion. Moo1, 2, tactical, all that. and, I still do like it. but, I've really gotten into GalCiv specifically because it's different. military is just a single facet of the game on purpose. there is a web of intrigue to plot with the aliens, and spreading your influence across a large map can be fullfilling. heck, just keeping your empire afloat in the opening is fun to me. it has that 'old school' charm to it. it's been a couple of weeks now, and I've on

the 'old guard' sure does come down hard on the newcomers over there. it has some of the most draconian board rules on the internet. maybe it's a backlash, or denial, or both. it used to be a fairly interesting board. now, it just seems to be a few bitter dudes sifting through the ashes, and lashing out at folk. btw, they have a patch out? I havn't touched that game in a month, was hoping for a patch. at the very least the AI. gonna check it out. in the end, I just want lots of

erm, ya know... I was just looking at the metaverse map... maybe they can add random events to Metaverse map like the ones in the game... the space sharks empire appearing outta nowhere all of a sudden... and climbing up to the first place... LOL (j/k, don't hit :p )

my few cents, your 'Spend Rate' is set too low. this is your primary means of controlling production (manufacturing) also, you don't want to keep morale as high as possible 'cause that increases pop growth, and leads to overpopulation which leads to lower morale and lower production. the trick is to find the 'sweet spot' for a given stage in your game where both are maximized. another tip is lots of starbases with upgrades, but it looks like you've quite a few (hard to tell f

not only the strategic challenge which is indespensible, but what I like most about this game in terms of the AI is that both the 'shell' and the 'core' are immersive and fun. the core AIs of the major races exhibit different personalities and I like the way it's presented to the player. like the other day the Anceans were ahead and acted all high and mighty and were demanding this and that, but then I took over one of their major planets by surprise, and they really humbled down a b

well, I would expect 'evil' AI's to attempt military victory first, and so, on. depends on what galaxy setup you are playing, my guess. granted, I haven't been defeated any other way than military yet (8 completed games, or so, all on 'beginner' ), like in most of my games the Drengin are evil so the first thing they do is declare war on everyone, and then proceed to spank everyone and demand chocolates. I'm getting different personalities from the different AIs so far, though. the

simplicity vs. complexity? hmmm, that's a tough one. I say make the game fun. that's subjective though... simple rules, complex strategies. give the game a character first, though. Go/Chess/Tetris/checkers/poker are 'simple' but complex at the same time. still played in GREAT numbers by a whole bunch of people. did those game designers (some of them prolly lived centuries ago) know something we don't know? :notsure: I mean chess alone has tons of books on opening strate

I was and still am a big fan of Moo2 with all its trappings and glories. I was bitterly dissapointed with Moo3 and its 'interpretation' of the 4x sim genre. In no way is it a successror to Moo2. It's a bland and sterile experience unlike the earlier games. I'm also a newly made fan of GalCiv the way it was designed is fine by me. It would be presumptious of me to try to talk a developer into making a sequel of a game I used to liked. GalCiv ultimately abstracts the mili

meh,, never thought I'd participate in a troll/fanboy/flame/game advocacy thread, but just for kicks... Moo3 AI - no challenge, plays to lose. GalCiv AI - makes me wake up in cold sweat at night and think of possible strategies I could have used, cause it's so damn good and is getting better with updates therefore, as you can plainly see, Moo3 is crap, and GalCiv is great. therefore, the originally suggested notion that GalCiv is crap is incorrect. <

heh, the Moo3 alarm can't distinguish between a.m and p.m., which kinda defeats the purpose. if yer gonna copy features from that game please don't copy the bugs. to make it more in GalCiv style I'd prefer a humourous random event (optional) that comes up once in while (say after 5 hours of non stop playing). something like "Suddenly, you don' feel like ruling the empire anymore. You feel sleepy, very sleepy.", or something goofy like that

ok, this is a flash-back from lengthy and perpetual D&D RPG alignment threads. (heh, there is even a name for them YAAT (Yet Another Alignment Thread))... one of the more popular rationalizations for paladins ransacking graveyards in search of shiny armor was 'They are good but they are not stupid' :p seriously, if Terror Stars are defined as 'evil tech' by the game then I'd call that a bug, unless the AI has become self-aware, or something ;p
