As a quick update about the random freezes where I can still hear sound, I discovered that if I disable in-game sound the freezes do not occur. So I'm playing without sound right now, but it runs great.
I'm having frequent freezes where I can still hear the music but nothing on the screen moves. I'm sure you already know about those, but I wanted to suggest adding a button near the "Turn" button in the lower right that executes all the automoves for that turn. It is useful to have all the moves complete before you actually end the turn, so you can plan any future strategy. As it stands now, the automove only triggers when you actually end the turn.
