Possible solution: After fighting with Fences and reading around on with web I happened to find a solution that well, works for me :) Discovered the desktop icon size was not selected. That is, right-click on empty desktop, select the View sub-menu, then select one of the sizes in the top section. I enabled Classic and all my Fences started displaying a single column again. Hope this helps someone.
