Upgrading ships with a unique part to a more modern version with identical unique part not possible?

Even though this is an old thread, I was really hoping someone could give me more information about this weapon/technology/event. I was playing, and had this technology unlocked, i went into the ship designer and put it on a design, then started adding cosmetics and my game crashed and that tech discovery was gone so im going to use cheatcodes to unlock it again but i have no clue what it is.
