I had a mix of auto route choices last night, altho majority were the long way round had several constructors that took more direct routes - including through 'uncharted' space, must be typical engineers! Edit: would be nice to be able to select way points as suggested by someone a while back!

I've not had the chance to try all of the starbase varieties as yet (game crashes!) but agree there are a number of opportunities to enhance the utility of each. Starbase defence: It's reasonable that a newly built starbase would have the defences to defend itself against 3-5 early game pirate vessels but I get the argument for a period of vulnerability - perhaps a 2 or 3 turn build period for a starbase, seems strange that a constructor can 'pop up' a
You can always set Pirates at lowest setting, altho even at uncommon there seems to be a lot of them and given engagements with pirates have caused the majority of game freezes it gets quite annoying!
I like the general thrust of this thread, would be an excellent inclusion in next patch for a trial before release.

That could be a future DLC for a new tech allowing 'cloaking' (Klingons etc!!)
Also only see 0.95, previous patch (38MB) seemed to run well, this one crashed after only 8 turns, also video sequences (research, colonisation etc) are 'jerky'.
Loaded one patch this morning (38MB) started new game, running fine. Loaded a second patch (11.8MB) early afternoon, started a new game and game crash by turn 8!!
Have found loading saved games very problematic, no difference between autosaves and my saves. Extremely slow to load, if at all, and then often crashes within 1-2 turns!
Have also experienced a crash when the AI attempted an invasion!
Had a similar issue, but was able to engage - then the game froze!!
The Assembly plant appears in the planetary build list but when actioned no icon appears on the planet tile, also seems to skip in the build sequence
I've reported same issue, even when survey vessel is part of a fleet
Game ran OK with a new game
OK, was running much better until my freighter that came from the Pragmatic Idealogy 'Trader' arrived at a minor race planet and I found that it did not actually have a trading license, rather the game crashed!
Well, this time clicked on 'Turn' button, actioned one 'Idle Ship" then froze - not impressed with 5.1 so far!!
Not good so far, on reloading saved game suffered immediate crash when I clicked on one of my starbases.
At Game Turn 149, first appearance of an anomaly in the shape of a diamond, attempted to click on it to ascertain what is was and game then froze. Had to close game, two further attempts to restart failed so have opted in for Beta 5.1.
