Don't know why, but after 1.4 all my 'assault fighters' are now escort role, and most other ship classes have changed to escort/support roles. Made an excellent campaign unplayable. I've noticed that fleets with repair capability replace fighters faster out of battle.

Terran Starbases can build assault fighter and interceptor modules, but these don't appear in combat. This occurred after the patch.
