Hey Carielf, Stardock, as a publisher, and Brad and yourself are some of the few entities I have any respect for in the gaming industry today that I had direct contact with years ago. So I am very glad to see you back. Luke

Honestly, why not make it that that if you have mithril which should be rarer than Iron you can research the ability to use it, and each round you stockpile an amount of the resource and as long as you have it stockpiled and researched you can use it, and by research, one to mine it, another for armor etc. That way if you find it early you can start mining it, even if your economy is not up to building such units yet. That way geographic luck play in, as well as your decis

Just another piece of advice on Power supplies, I know this is late but I did not see it mentioned. Many of the newer 600+ watt power supplies have a minimum load on them. If you do not reach that minimum load they either will not function or will function erratically. I currently have a power supply that has a minimum load requirement but I also run a CAD system with a huge raid array and between that the CPU and have a regular graphics card and a CAD card am well over that requirement, but

Just to make a point, but a starbase is a sitting duck for any ship that can lug a large enough and dense enough object up to a decent fraction of light speed, or for that matter a single battleship or dreadnought class ship with high end railguns. It sits still, it does not matter how many offensive or defensive weapons it has. It sits still, you throw a big enough fast enough rock at it, its dead.

I have two problems one is that there is a memory leak somewhere in the game, it will play for fine for hours or so it seems but it will slowl down minutely over tiem until its impossible to zoom or select anything if left to run long enough The other issue and this may not be something for beta 1, but it is a very basic part of the game is that I have created and started probably 40 games with a custome map 100 planents 4 galaxies and 10 players and there are always at least 2 AI playe

Alright, I am going to nail a few things here because its obvious people do not understand what I am talking about. First .1 C which is a C fractional velocity is 1/10 the speed of Light. Second I never stated they would use energy shields, I stated they would have to use some type of sheild and what that shield would have to withstand in a standard solar system. That would include Particles traveling at or near the speed of Light (Radiation), cosmic dust, mi

Umm there is already a large measure of it in any scifi game. My issue with the laser's and cannons is that it make its to easy. Far to easy, it basically forces you into head to head battles, which is not the way you would fight given the chance, and it just about rules out any smaller fleet beating a larger fleet by using better manuevers. The only way a smaller fleet will win in such a battle is if the player screws the pooch

I will give you a very short answer, it will allow far more flexibile and interesting combat operations. It will also allow them to balance the various factions easier. Hmm ohh yes it will be *gasp* more realisitic but in this case, realism could be alot more fun than fantasy because *gasp* you actually have to make tactical and strategic decisions that have empire wide effects. *shrugs* perhaps its just me and my engineering and military mind set, but I find anything that makes battl

Emperor, I like discussing things and while its not the real world, anything we dicuss could give the creators of the game an idea and that is generally a good thing. And if you do nto wish to read the long posts don't *smiles* Luke

Hmm sentientschematicsofNinjas I am an engineering major so let me just state that up front. It is possible for an abrams tank to fire a round while on the move and that is using a system that creates a rather large recoil and *cough* I was in the military, infantry by chance before I went back to school. Now take a shell fill it with ball bearings, fire it through a rail gun, ie accelerate it using a recoiless system. The speed of the shell is going to be that of the ships ac

Actually you did not disagree with me at all, you simply found a way to get around the distance limitation of dealing with any type of directed energy weapon. I did not say they would be useless just that there range would be extremely limited. Even an X ray laser in space would have a small range in relation to how large space is and how far apart ships could potentially be. As far as unguided munitions being useless, thats a yes no issue. If you use a very dense material, you could

As I read through this post, I fear that I have to disagree with certain posters that state that formations are going to be useless. I understand the argument they are making but they are forgeting a few very important concenpts. Formations are used for A) Defense a) overlapping fields of fire. b) screenining larger ships B) Offense a) with small fleets a single formation depending on how it is deployed in relation to the enemy will allow e

Just so you know, I will not buy a copy of any game that uses starforce ever. Even if its a great game, forget it. I have had issues with thier copy protection. Issues that were never resolved. I was informed on one occasion after I sent the email and got a response that no such email or response were ever received. I will never deal with those people again.

Just a point that you will never heard mentioned in College, or in any textbook about programming. Using a basic array and a simple search you can load the entire unabridged dictionary and search for words faster, than if you use any other method. I did not believe this but then again I met one of the Engineers that helped build Intel, his name is Elliot, and he proved it by writing the code and loading the entire vocabulary in an array and using a simple sort. Th

Just a suggestion, after reading through the thread.... Refitting ships can fall into three categories. Complete Refit - ie new hull composition upgrades, entire new weapon systems ie one system being pulled out another being replaced. New engine designs etc. Decide what constitutes a complete refit and have those choices force the ships to go to a planet or a space station, which would make space stations a bit more of a necessity and add more st
