I'm not sure how many games really are released with a Steamworks version and a non-Steamworks version. I'll take your word that it's "a lot".
That's not what I said. I said lots of games have steam and non-steam versions. Typically the non-steam versions are released as a direct download by the developer (such as the games I can download from the Stardock site) or GoG and the Humble Store
Give me $20M and I'll hire the people necessary to make it non-Steam works. May the check payable out to me directly please.
I realize that was a joke but I'm not sure Stardock getting some help through crowdfunding would be a bad idea. If making a non-steam version costs so much then why not make a kickstarter and make it clear that the game is coming out for steam no matter what but you can kickstart a DRM-fre
Yes and it's not 2008 anymore. Technology has moved on.
I didn't realize the "Gamer's Bill of Rights" had an expiration date. It's not 1791 anymore either yet the U.S. Bill of rights still applies. I thought they were supposed to be principles not specific implementations. It doesn't say for example you have to release a game on any specific media type that would date it. The closest thing

It's largely a result of Consoles that have held back 64bit adoption in gaming (and heck DirectX adoption beyond 9). Since the Xbox360 and PS3 were essentially 32bit DirectX 9 boxes and developers tended to want to at least leave the option for a console port (who am I kidding, most top tier games were developed on consoles first then ported to PC in recent years) that's been the glass ceiling for PCs. Since both the PS4 and Xbone are 64bit loads of RAM I'd suspect we&
It certainly can be done without Steamworks, but Brad is pointing out that it makes life a lot easier to do what he's trying to do. Also, Star Citizen and Minecraft are both true indie projects. One is super-low resources, AI, etc and was able to be organically grown along with the user base. It was never intended to be what it became - a release like GC3 will need to be planned from the ground up.

Sometimes I wonder if Brad wishes he'd never written that thing. The only references I ever see to it these days are to throw something back in his face
Probably because people believed in the principles behind it and he championed them then turned around and starting violating them when it became convenient to do so. I'm not against a Steam release, I'm for a non-steam release. I back a lot of
I disagree. If steam is needed as a download manager, it's not necessarily being used as DRM. If you can shut steam off after you download the game, the gamer's bill of rights stands unbroken.
You disagree with what? Please reread what I wrote, specifically the first sentence you quoted. Here, I'll retype it for you with with emphasis added: -> IF THE GAME REQUIRES STEAM RUNNING IN OR

I for one will not be pre-ordering the game if it is Steam only. I may not get it at all depending on how much it requires Steam to run. I don't get why I can't just download the game from the same web page I download my other Stardock software from. Failing that then GoG or even the Humble Store are both acceptable to me though I'd really rather have a disc copy. If the game requires steam running in order to function it directly violates Stardock'
