I played another 4X game where as you explored you would kinda follow a bread crumb trail of an old civilization that used to be another but the other races teamed up and kicked them out. You would find hints thru old drifting ships and baron worlds. But as you go thru there are hints of their return, and sure enough they pop back in, I think that traveled from another galaxy.
