Mac and Steambox support are likely but NOT promised. Depends on the challenge of supporting OpenGL.
Well this is certainly the most promising bit of news we've heard yet. Not just "thinking about it," now it's "likely." Thanks, Frogboy. I'll keep watching.

Seems I was wrong. Crossover does not support anything beyond DX9. Oh, well. Still hoping for an OS X native version of GalCiv 3.

Wine may not be able to handle DX10, but I believe that Crossover can. So it's a compromise. If they ultimately decide against a native port, they could be nice and test it in Crossover to see if they can make it compatible.

Perhaps a system could be created where, for every starbase, the player establishes supply routes from a nearby planet or planets. It could operate much like a trade route, except the shorter the better. Once a supply route (or routes) is set up, then a portion of the industry from the route's origin would be sent to the starbase for use in building upgrades. The greater the industrial base on the originating planet, or the more routes you establish, the faster upgrades

The trick is to convince them to make that initial investment. I'm convinced that there are enough eager Mac/Linux gamers out there to more than subsidize the initial development costs. And from there, future development costs will be much lower.

Um, yeah. You don't really speak for all of us. Or even very many of us. No offense, but if you want to play GalCiv 2, play GalCiv 2. And if the devs think there is enough demand to port the game to other platforms (news flash: there is) then they will. And no, it won't somehow make the game worse. This isn't 2006 anymore. Thanks for your opinion, though.

I suspect that the higher Linux sales is, in fact, due to pent-up demand. There's actually no scarcity of native Mac games these days, not like the old days. But Linux is still something of a gaming desert (not counting Wine). However, I expect that to change in the coming years, now that Valve is so gung-ho for the platform. The great thing about it is, as long as a game like GalCiv 3 is ported to either Mac or Linux, a port for the other platform is a might-as-we

I'm guessing that the new iPads will be 64-bit, like the new iPhone. Of course, an iOS version would likely be more complicated to port, but it would open up a huge segment of the market and, as you pointed out, games like this are ideal for tablet interfaces. While I would prefer an OS X version that I can play on my computer with huge monitor, I'd be satisfied with an iOS version that I could at least play on my iPad. Both, however, would be even sweeter, especiall

Well, at least they didn't give us an outright no. "Thinking about it" is a long way from their position in 2006.
I'm fairly sure I don't get bent out of shape because a game is being released on another platform. Potentially it means more sales in the long term, which means I get to see more games I like being released, which also go on to be released on other platforms, and so on. I'm not saying the platform ports are easy but they have become more popular over the years. And frankly, Windows is pretty damn expens

Also, when you consider the relatively limited appeal of 4X games like GalCiv (as compared to franchises like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto), you'd think that an indie company like Stardock would want to spread their game over as many platforms as possible to maximize their sales. Obviously I cannot claim to know what drives their business decisions, but this seems logical to me.

151 Replies 728,801 Views

Amen to that. The market is very different now than it was in 2006, so much so that I'm a little surprised that Stardock is still so heavily invested in being Windows-only. I sincerely hope that they change their tune, as I love their games and would really like to play this one. But with Wine not an option for GalCiv 3, a native port is going to be my only option.

Since DirectX10 and 11 are still unsupported in Wine, it looks like the only way Mac/Linux gamers will get to play this is if Stardock creates or commissions an official port.

You know what else I don't understand? Why some Windows gamers get all bent out of shape whenever a non-Windows gamer suggests the possibility of a Mac or Linux version of their favorite game. Do you guys really believe that porting to other platforms will somehow take something away from the game, make it not as good as it could have been? We all want to play the game, and we're simply pointing out that a relatively minor investment on the front end can have long te
"Left 4 Dead 2 is running at 315 FPS on Linux. That the Linux version runs faster than the Windows version (270.6) seems a little counter-intuitive, given the greater amount of time we have spent on the Windows version. However, it does speak to the underlying efficiency of the kernel and OpenGL. Interestingly, in the process of working with hardware vendors we also sped up the OpenGL implementation on Windows. Lef

Stardock has, in the past, expressed an extreme devotion to being Windows-only that never made much sense to me, but which makes even less sense now. I hope that they have truly reevaluated that position.

151 Replies 728,801 Views

Well, hopefully they can successfully translate from DirectX to OpenGL, because I don't know that Wine can handle DX10 or 11 that well, if at all. Which means GalCiv 3 could be truly Windows locked. I also wonder why developers insist on locking themselves into one platform like that when there are so many other eager gamers on other platform that would love to buy games like this. A Mac version (and Linux, too) should be a no-brainer at this point in time. Even iO

Hey, all we can ask is that you seriously consider it. If nothing else, please at least try to make it play nice with Wine. I can play GalCiv 2 in a Wineskin, but it has always been a bit wonky, and some things still don't work right.

151 Replies 728,801 Views

Will GalCiv III be supporting any platforms other than Windows? Specifically, you really need to release a Mac & Linux version. You'll find there are a lot of eager Mac/Linux gamers out there who are ready to throw their money at you for native versions. How about some love for us non-Windows users?
