how do i use a downloaded skin, cursor, etc. in Windows XP WinCustomize Forums

i downloaded a couple skins and cursors but how do i use them? the skin has the .desktop file end and when i rightclick on the desktop, go to properties and desktop, it wont accept the .desktop type... any1 know how to use it? btw same thing with the cursor no clue how to use it.
