This is my argument whether it is a righteous argument or not... This is not really an article about skinning its an article about Wincustomize and Skinning. What aggravates me is the new person coming here is going to be told this and that is skinning... Quoted for emphasis. This is a good point. The article reads like Wincustomize/Stardock is an authoritative source of skinning, of which
You can on-the-fly swap out themes, wallpapers, icons, bootskins, logon screens, screensavers etc. So to simply dismiss it as another hack is false. I believe you reinforced my point. None of what you mentioned was added by the software. It was merely made more accessible . If I handed a user instructions on how to do everything you mentioned above manually, would they purchase StyleXP? The ma
Rafael: I have a problem with someone who has to base their whole online presence with a url that's a disparagement for someone else. I may not agree with Stardock on just about everything these days or even like their methods, but if someone came to me with an anti-stardock.com url i would feel the same way as i do with your anti-tgt. Its the reason i can't stand Apple's marketing campaigns. Why does Apple feel the
TheSkinsFactory , Just a few updates I wanted to share. I will soon abandon the ways of illegitimate patching/distribution of Uxtheme (and related) binaries for a newer in-memory method [1]. I have also gone down the road of open-source rather than closed-source/proprietary (StyleXP) for maximum community absorption. - Rafael [1] libunsigned source code - http://anti-tgtsoft.com/?p=8
"Frogboy", We were indeed comparing apples and oranges. I was also not aware your newer versions had the aforementioned enhancements, I stand corrected. When I referred to Uxtheme usage, I meant it literally as in the Uxtheme.dll library itself. WindowBlinds does use the library [1]. That said, it doesn't appear that you rely on Uxtheme for skinning related purposes but I have no way of validating this in a timely and non-exhausting manner. I'll take your word for it. <img src=
I fail to see Rafael's point. Wblinds dosen't use any significant CPU either once it's loaded. And it's not a violation of MS's EULA. My point is Brad's comment is not accurate. I'm not arguing that WindowBlinds isn't efficient, just commenting on the article content. Don't get me wrong, I like Brad and his company's products, and we keep in touch successfully <
To add to my post... * Before patch The targeted theme verification function in Uxtheme consists of approximately 86 instructions of which consume at least 86 CPU cycles, excluding external API that is accessed and other factors (likely amasses to over 100 cycles). * After patch The function is altered to only execute a handful of instructions (about 4 total), completely bypassing all the crap. You won't see a jump in performance, but your CPU thanks you. - Raf
WindowBlinds which, at the risk of letting my bias shows, is absolutely superior to patching uxtheme at this point in terms of memory use, performance, and quality. This is not accurate. * Memory use Patching Uxtheme is a one-time deal and consumes no memory. Memory is saved because the bytes written to Uxtheme prevent stack allocation code from executing (amongst other things). As WindowBlinds does not completely replace the Windows skinnin
To be fair, StyleXP hasn't (for quite some time) altered the Uxtheme on disk. They've switched to modifying it in memory using a kernel-mode driver. Because of this switch, you need not concern yourself with system restore/etc. About the legal concerns -- I patch and store pre-patched Uxtheme libraries in my widely-used repository and have yet to receive a C&D. TGTSoft patches this binary and sells their patcher as commercial sof
