I like how the Honor Harrington Universe handles missiles vs. beams. Missiles have a longer range than beams. You can extend the missile range via tech developments. The downside is that laser (beam) point defense systems, counter missiles and ECM can stop/degrade missile attacks. Missile inventory is also limited, but it can be extended via tech or larger ships.
