Steam is the worst of the digital distribution platforms I use. I'd much rather get through Impulse or GOG. Yes, I have steam, yes I use it ... the only real attraction it has is a source of evil: its large cache of exclusive deals that you can't get without Steam. That's not a competitive advantage, that's an anti-competitive advantage.

I am so glad TBSes and PC gaming are far from the dead state so many media outlets reporting on gaming claim them to be. I just can't really see a TBS working well on a console. Viva la TBS!
I like really ramping up techs fast. Even on harder difficulties, I could keep ahead of the AI on GC2 ..... or if not, at least counter their weapon and defense choices.
Yeah, I'm all for saving money, but I'm getting sick of the effing 1366x768 displays. So ridiculous ... though I place GC2 on it from time to time. I miss my older one with a 1280x800 :/
Stars! I wonder if Brad ever played around with it. So sad Stars! Supernova Genesis became vaporware. I hope someone picks up the franchise someday.
I was able to beat the AI to a lot of good colonies in GC2 by giving my colony ships lots of engines. Same with constructors for building outposts on resources.
Quoting Chibiabos, reply 16Firefox has become very unstable over the years... a few BSODs Usermode software on modern versions of Windows cannot directly cause a BSOD. If it can, then that's a bug/vulnerability in the kernel or drivers. BSODs tend to pretty universally be due to driver bugs or hardware faults.
Except I only got them using Firefox watching live streaming video, and got several of them per day
Steam is an irritation. I was pondering foreswearing it altogether at Civ V's original release, but I finally caved. There are some things I will not tolerate, however, obtrusive DRM coming foremost to mind. Thankfully its been promised from the getgo that an internet connection will not be required ... that seems silly to be thankful of that, considering Brad wrote the Gamer's Bill of Rights, but Brad did seem to change his mind on Steam. I really wish they&
No to tactical combat As for the tech tree, I'm for generic, but less for arbitrary grinding. I wish you could just, for instance, research a basic "Laser Weapon," then apply your research strengths to improving it and come up with your own "Laser Mark II" whose power increases or size decreases, etc., based on your particular civ's research strengths, or you could move on to the next iteration, instead of grinding through each pre-coded laser weapon stat.
I think I still have a GC2 disc around somewhere, but its just the vanilla version. I bought the full edition with all expansions on Impulse a few years back because it was so cheap which means the disc I have is redundant.
lol I saw your subject and wanted to throw in a snark about Snathi ... but you beat me to the punch :P I thought about for awhile making a fake joke GalCiv III annoucement, giving it the subtitle 'RISE OF THE SNATHI' wielding a scary, glowing acorn or somesuch XD
Heh ..... did you have to re-install Impulse under its new owner? :P
Don't mess this up SD.
Easy to say, harder to do ... but in the end, I don't think I'm alone in feeling of all the publishers out there, Stardock takes greater strides in making things right for its customers when one of its launches flops, like War of Magic. I'm not sure if Brad ever mentioned how many of us early adopters and launch-day purchasers there were whom he had to, hat in hand, o
"Better" is subjective. I find Steam's middleware stuff more annoying than anything. Endless Space was okay. I am getting increasingly annoyed with the overlay popups on LH .. .I should just kill them. I hate it when I'm trying to see how much gold I have when .... OKAY SHUP STEAM GOWAY! For me, "better" is unobtrusive ... Steam, to me, is obtrusive. I gave Facebook a try, found I hated it, I hated the spam, and have come to realize
Stardock's honestly lost a few points in my eyes over the years. However, it isn't as though other publishers haven't miffed me ... I'm underwater at the moment unfortunately, but I expect to start a new job next month and hopefully will have some splurge money come December. If the discount is still available then, I probably will splurge for the cheaper beta buy-in. I still enjoy GalCiv II. Whatever differences I've been developing, Brad has earne
I can see this having limitations. Games tend to stay steady in price for awhile .... so what then if the currencies seriously diverge (the euro or pound skyrocket or plummet against the dollar, etc.)? Should the American price be the 'base' price and the price in other currencies should fluctuate on their relative value to the dollar, or vice-versa?
Quoting Chibiabos, reply 14 It may be free in terms of not having to pay money for the client itself, but it is not free in that it costs system resources to play a game you buy with it (that don't go to the game itself). I honestly am not big on multiplayer, and single player games don't require a lobby. Yeah, I know, there's a lot of fans I'm sure thrilled that GC3 will be multiplayer ... I hope
I loved tactical combat in MOO2, getting my ships in position, especially when I had them decked out so a small force could rip through a much larger enemy fleet, use transporters or boarding pods to steal the enemies' own ships out from under them, etc. I didn't mind the tedium ... but while I found GC2's combat viewer a bit underwhelming (and lack of range, speed or rate of fire differences in the combat viewer), I don't want a MOO2 nor even SOTS level of finesse (thou
I admit, when I got the e-mail saying that Gal Civs III was announced I almost yelled for joy! It's been a long-time coming; but dang it, I'm so happy! Now... I just need more money, lol.
And thankful it isn't the first of April? :P
I still don't like Steam. :( I thought Brad didn't either, but I guess he changed his mind. It seems like he changed his mind before divorcing Impulse. I don't like third party software like the steam client to have to constantly run. When I'm playing a full screen game, I'd like every resource my computer has to go toward making the graphics as crisp as possible and the gameplay as smooth and lag-free as possible ... a third party
When a star exhales, watch out ...
Has Blizzard done this recently? I though they had shunned LAN gaming. :/ I miss the original Starcraft and BroodWar LAN parties.
I'm so glad to hear that hexes are in. Still think Elemental would have been better with them as well.
I very much agree. Hexes would have been great for elemental. I am guessing that since GC3 will be getting them, though, a future expansion or sequel of Elemental will as well
I loved Master of Orion II. I hope someone makes a worthy Master of Orion IV ... let's just forget III. Anyhoo, I didn't mind the tactical combat in MOO ... but that was MOO. GalCiv isn't MOO. GalCiv is GalCiv. I did and do wish for something a bit more than GC2's combat viewer ... I wish different technologies could give different weapon ranges and firing rates on weapons, not just simple weapon strength versus armor/shields/anti-missile defens
