My borders were slowly pushing back the borders of the only AI I was playing with when suddenly, in the middle of my territory, a "strip" of AI influence

Hi all, Just signed up for the beta and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm a veteran CIV and Moo2 player and although i've owned the older Galciv titles I don't think I gave them the love they deserved :) So, with that out of the way I've got a few queries in order to grasp the fundamentals of the game. 1) Starbases - if you build a starbase on say... antimatter, outwith the range of one of your colonies, what benefit would it provide (if any)
