As far as I know, Sins, like most games, only uses one core, maybe it threads some purely graphical-related operations like loading textures, but all the business logic seems to be single-thread as you won't see Sins splitting a
2 gig of ram is very low... specially with Vista eating almost 1 gb for running with ease...
It's not very low. It's the officially recommended amount of RAM for this game, on Vista. It's also what most people have in their computer. Anyway only about 10% of people run 64-bit Windows so it's not like they designed the game to only run well on systems with above 3GB of ram.

@bhereg : if you're kicked back to the desktop, that's a game crash, it's another issue completely, and a much more serious one. If the game always crash there might be a problem with your computer, because it's quite stable for me and most players. Also, my CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo, so I think the lag issue has nothing to do with what company designed the CPU. My computer is up-to-date and it can run any game at the performance I would expect from it. Not Sins. Well, as I said I ne

Yesterday night there were about 180 active games of vanilla Sins and about 65 of Entrenchment IIRC. So my somewhat informed guess is that the majority is still playing vanilla Sins. But you can expect that to change gradually, just like today most people play Starcraft Broodwar or Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne.
What is it then?
It's Sins of a Solar Empire being greedy with CPU time, that's the only way I can explain it. Either it has problems maintaining a large, fluctuating number of ships in memory, or updating AI logic for numerous player once the game has attained a certain degree of complexity... I don't know. But it's out of the control of the player.

I've indeed lost more games than is indicated by my record. Again, that's pretty stupid. A player leaving the game has, by definition, resigned. It's like that in St

The threshold point when the lag sets in, starts around when every player has about 5 planets.. It's all down hill from there.<br

Just played a game of Entrenchment tonight with 5 other players online. It ran pretty well. Zooming in on a large army will still pause for a full 2 seconds or more sometimes, but I guess that's with all the texture/effects loading that has to take place at that moment. The general framerate was pretty damn good. I should test it with AIs though. My most laggy games were against comps, but in 1.13.
That's what the latest patches of Sins did: strengthen AI. Heck, in Entrenchment, pirates are powerful. Not even 3 capital ships matched with 30 frigates are sufficient to decimate their entire fleet. And that's not even multiplayer. The improved AI is what many Sins players have always rooted for. I suggest that you master dealing with the AI in single player first, exploiting its weaknesses.
It

I played a 3 player FFA in multiplayer tonight, which I lost as usual. I lost mainly because it quickly turned into a 1vs2, me being the "1". That's ok, I can't prevent that from happening. However : - One player quit the game early on. I didn't even notice, but an AI took his place. WTF. I've had to fight against an AI the whole time, while the human player built his army and started to whoop my ass on the other side of the system. I never wanted to play against an AI. I can't

I can confirm, as of Sins 1.15, the game still becomes a slidewhow with a few AI players ( >= 4) after a while. It seems less severe than before, but it's still there. I'm running on an [email protected]. I would upgrade my CPU, but it seems that even the best Core i7 isn't going to cut it, the game just becomes incredibly greedy with CPU time. It's one of my major gripes with Sins of a Solar Empire.

What I'd really like to see is someone playing TEC or Advent, at least 1v2 against hard AIs. Unfair is even better. I just can't do it. Well so ok, that's not multiplayer. For multiplayer, any replay of a very good player in a difficult position is welcome.

Now that I'm not a high school student without income anymore, I can afford to pay for my games and I gladly do so. There are still cases where I don't feel any shame for pirating a game : - There's no demo and I want to try it before I buy - The game is old and hard to find in stores - Even if I do find it, my money probably isn't going to the original developper Services like Steam and Impulse make it much easier than before to buy and inst

Hi Thoumsin, I'm not armed for an OpenGL vs Direct3D debate and I think it is largely irrelevant to any performance problems one may have with Sins. First, Sins of a Solar Empire is really not GPU-bound at all, anyone can test that themselves easily. Even if there was a significant performance difference between OpenGL and Direct3D, it wouldn't have any relevance. I don't think the Wikipedia article you quoted suggested that there is a significant performance difference betwee
