Trading for specialization tech precludes researching others?

I traded for Beam Miniaturization earlier in my current game. I just researched that specialization's precursor Beam Weapons. I am now unable to choose a specialization. I believe if I had not traded for Beam Miniaturization before researching Focused Beam Weapons or Low-Cost Beam Weapons I would then have been able to have chosen either specialization and then traded for Beam Miniaturization.

So it seems that trading for a specialization before researching one of the three techs in a particular set stops you from researching anymore in that group as if you had researched it your self. So you have to trade for the other two also. If you had researched one on your own you'd only have to trade for two.

Is this correct?

I think you can only have 1 specialization now per category...which makes sense otherwise it wouldn't be a specialization.

  If so, i would like a warning that buying a tech would block researching another tech.

I am pretty sure that if you Start a specialization and run through one turn you can go an buy another and get both.  I got both Supportive population and Trade licences this morning I think. I will recheck.

Larenex he is talking about the 0.90 Opt-In. If you didn't Opt-In you can select all three techs in the specialization branches.

It is possible to trade for specializations that you don't have in Beta 6. I have tested that...

 

But as OP found out... if you trade for one before you researched one you are stuck with the traded one, but you may trade for the others later.

 

I'm not sure if I like that you may trade for them, sort of remove the fun of that feature. I hope they restrict that and make the tech mutually exclusive even on the trading table.

I don't think you can. Honestly, it seems wierd that you can trade specializations.

You can trade for them. I traded for beam miniaturization after I researched beam focus. I did not know that trading for one before researching one of the choices would collapse the category, but I can see how that might happen. Once you have picked one of the three it should be no problem. I will have to watch out for that.

I deliberately avoided trading for specialization techs if I didn't have one already.  I expected the behavior you have found, so thanks for confirming.

Now, I look to see what they have to make sure I am choosing something different.

You can absolutely trade for multiple specializations.  I already "filled out" one just by doing that.  And this is Working As Intended, as it is allowing players to still get things they might not otherwise be able to.  Like, say, full upgraded Extreme Worlds.

Well, yes.  I thought that part was a given.  I was commenting on someone who thought that once you were locked out of a spec, you were locked out for good.

I wouldn't expect much of this to change. I personally think specializations should be untradable ... but considering all the complaints about specialization I'm aware my idea is unpopular. Because of this expect that you will need to research first then trade if you want to research one.

I prefer being unable to trade specializations as well. I see it sort of like infrastructure not knowledge.

That's awful game design. This is an issue that need fixed. You shouldn't have to shoot yourself in the foot because the game's mechanics are poorly implemented.

as far as trading mechanics as they currently are it would be nice if the techs would be split by catagory and then highlighted for spcialization techs where you have at least 1/3 or if you have 0/3
