My experience in Beta 4 so far

Hello,

I just wanted to share my own feedback regarding the current state of the game.  First off I will give my system specs to get it out of the way.

Windows 7 Professional 64

i7 3770k 3.5ghz (reads 3.8 off to the right for some reason)

8gb DDR3 RAM

GTX 660 2gb

Resolution 1920 x 1080

Early on I ran into no apparent issues. It actually wasn't until after turn 600 I was forced play zoomed out to avoid slow down on the map.  (I enjoy playing the "long game" so to speak).  By turn 1200 I was even experiencing slow downs of all kinds and battles were completely unplayable as it was taking a really long time for them to load.  I threw in the towel on that one shortly after because at that point it felt unplayable as a whole.  This was on an immense map with two AI And I was playing the Terrans.  I should also mention it wasn't just the game that was slowing down, it was my system as well, and it continued that way after closing out the game for a few minutes.

i then tried to play the Dregin on a large map with two AI.  I think I was 300+ turns in when I begin experincing trouble.  Mainly in the form of the AI not finishing their turn.  I'm not sure if it's because I had a lot of star bases lining the edge of my territory this time or not, but before I started that process i hadnt had an issue.  I was trying to see how effective the star bases were right now.  I tried reloading a previous save during the AI's unending turn but that caused the game to crash to desktop every time.

I have tried increasing my virtual memory but that hasn't helped.  Windows 7 had it automatically set to 8gb and I changed it to 8gb min and 12gb Max.  I've seen no improvement in that regard.

i have been enjoying the game for the most part and look forward to seeing improvements as they come down the road.

I am on an immense map with all factions. I am experiencing a 'slow down' as well. I am turn 554 or so. I am slowly taking the Drengins planets and I have dozens of ships/fleets that I have to give commands for as well as planets and starbases.

I have not had any crashes,  just a slow down as I have a LOT of objects on the screen. I can tell the game is somewhat bound by the single processor funneling data into the GPU.

I have a I3570K overclocked to 4.2 and 16 gigs of Ram. I also play on an SSd and have my page file min and max set to 24 gigs.

My goodness, I am in awe. I have never played to over 500 turns. I am currently playing a Gigantic map game for over a week and probably 25+ hours and I am at about turn 280. I have had some minor memory problems requiring reboot, but no crashes.

I play very slow games. If I don't play meticulous, I get careless and lose interest. When I have 50+ colonies it might take me a half hour at least per turn. Probably ridiculous but that's me.

In my current game I am playing on AI normal, which I normally don't do. I usually play this place holder AI on genius at least. The game is already won since I have lapped all of the AI and they are all overjoyed or content, but I play on just to test the long term game.

I am enjoying playing the beta with all the flaws and exploits but it is a totally different experience than a game with a finished product. I am looking forward to the next release and a more fleshed out game.

I'd love to get as far as Larsenex, but my game keeps crashing when I get too deep into the game. :( Yes, I've been in repeated contact with SD over the issue.

*pause*

Has allowed me to sharpen my early/early-mid game tactics at least. :D

I am getting into the mid 200s in turns.  By then I have coddled my economy into a decent powerhouse and caught up in military then achieved military dominance.  I beat up a few Drengin and lose the challenge factor.  By then, I am also starting to experience the lag issues described above on my 8 gig system.  As soon as the AI gets any kind of smarts, I will be in trouble.  Then the turn count is likely to get much higher.  I definitely need to think about adding memory.

I admire you people and your persistence. I fully expected there would such game play.  There's a lot of us compulsive folk here.  Some of us more so than others! It is part of what the Beta needs.  Well done!

I've played a few games past 200 turns now, always as the Yor, and have noticed some slow down past that point, and occasional crashes, especially while waiting for the AI to play.  What usually ends my games is that no matter what I focus on I completely dominate the galaxy with culture.  Even the hardest AI get culture flipped after a few hundred turns.  And of course it's hard not to take advantage of exploits, in particular buying enemies entire fleets, and that mine-able resources are almost worthless yet AI will trade large amounts of anything for them.  Despite all this, it's still a fun game and I'm excited to watch it develop.  No matter how long a game I play I can't get to the end of the tech tree, which I love
