The ship designer is out now in the the alpha 2.0 patch, so when have a that ship designed feel free to post it here and so others can see what kind of cool things you can build with it.

Here is the A949 DISKORD,
its the first in a line of ships that have been designed by an empire with economic difficulties.
They only construct the bare minimum of parts, in order to reduce build times.
Only some areas are pressurised, most are open to the void or missing hullplates.
To compensate for the lack of armor they rely on larger shield generators,
and lots of guns ...
Below are the ship designs I submitted for the contest. I have to commend the players who can design appealing Altarian ships. Their ship parts are, to me, the most visually appealing, but they are SO hard to work with.
Huge Terran ship with rotating habitation modules and mount points for weapons. The "Stardock" is cheesy but I was playing with how to add wording just using the ship designer.
A very simple (part-wise) large ship made with Iridium parts (as the Terran player).
A very simple (part-wise) medium ship made with Altarian parts (as the Terran player--would have looked better as Altarian, I think).
I'm probably one of the few who enjoys designing non-combat ships. This is a Terran colony "Bling" ship made with all Terran parts and counter-rotating habitation modules. For me, the early game is dominated by colony ships and I want mine to look awesome.
Finally, my personal favorite of my five designs, a Terran freighter "Bling" ship made with mixed parts. The habitation ring rotates (as you may have noticed, I saved the habitation ring as a custom part, along with several other parts from the colony ship (which I made first.)) The "joeys" (cargo modules) are a separate part, so this ship could be converted to an assault ship with Troop Modules. I also added more bling to the shuttles and shuttle mounts forward, forward-facing thrusters on the bridge module, and the Interstellar Shipping (ISS) logo to the bridge module (hard to see from the angle I have the ship at).
Well there goes my chance to win. You guys have blown my contest designs away. Great ships guys!

Hamilmac, those are some nice ships. I love how they are completely realistic. If we built ships right now, that's probably what they'd look like. Great work!

The Drengin Shredder.
A medium mining vessel. Cannon armed to pulverise asteroids and space debris. Also work quite well at taking other things apart for their resources. Of course it has sufficient defenses in case those things shoot back.
When we are going to have asteroid mining capabilities this bad boy is the one to do it.

I hope the game will have an easy way to download player created ships, would be great to add all these in quickly at some point.
In one of the dev stream, it was stated that in the future ship designs might be able to be shared through the steam workshop.
For now:
Get the design files for the ship you want to have. And place (you might need to unzip) them in your "My Documents\My Games\GalCiv3\Designs" directory. In some of the posts there are links to them, for others you might have to pm the creator.

That ship is cool and mean looking THECW! Great job! In fact, as I'm going through the forum, you have several fantastic ship designs.
Adam, Awesome fighter! I really admire your ability to make Altarian part ships look so good. The parts are so dang hard to work with.
A place to trade ship designs easily is definitely a feature the game needs to have.

Just wanted to say thanks for the kind comments. I haven't spent much time in this thread (work, family, commute, life) but went back last night looking through the posted ship designs. All of you have designed some awesome looking ships! Stardock needs to get off its encounter-suited backside 
and add a tool or (safe) thread that allows us to share ships and parts.
