The ship designer is out now in the the alpha 2.0 patch, so when have a that ship designed feel free to post it here and so others can see what kind of cool things you can build with it.
Don't be so pessimistic--this is a pretty snappy design.

Rand, those latest two fighter designs are pretty wicked! I especially like the Dauntless--it's got some beautiful proportions and a great silhouette.

I looks likes it is the baby of an Altarian and Thalan ship encounter.
Premise.
I had problems with getting some animation working the way i desired, so i build this ship as a test case for various animations. In the end i solved it by using hidden connector parts. The part i used was the small cube, and those small cubes i minimized to keep them from showing in the final ship.
By using this method i was able to split a single hard-point into a mount hard-point and an animation hard-point whose settings i could manipulate independently from each other without them interfering with each other. In the Scavenger the hidden components allow me to animate the 7 (6 of them folding) survey antennas and the 3 fanning lasers. In reality there are only 1 survey module, 2 lasers, 4 hyper drives, 5 sensors, and 3 life support components used, all others are either mirrors or completely fake. The low techs allow the ship to be build really early in the game.
Take note of the fact that the folding antennas folds but stay on their location even while they have both an offset and a rotation from the mounting hard-point, and how the lasers pan on their sweeping arm while keeping connective locality (both on the laser connection to the arm, and the connection between the arm and the wing) intact.

There's some really good ships on here, I especially like the colony ships. I'm not expecting to place in the competition, (though a thousand pounds would be really nice to help me get my life together) But here are my entries
Beam corvette, cruiser and battleship resepctively (i've since updated the design a little more and added even more beams)

Rand--that Lexington Class rocks. I love the mix of parts... this may be my favorite (thus far) of your Star Trek inspired ships. How would I go about getting a copy of it, I want to take it apart and see how you did that...

I did the Lexington Class from schematic file I downloaded from web and printed it. It's from an actual Star Trek ship, PM me your e-addy, I'll pack it up and send it your way.
Working on an Intrepid Class ( ST: Voyager ) now. Should be finished some time tmw.
Edit: I should mention the warp nacelles are custom made parts. Let know if you want those too.

With all these Terran combat ships gather here, the Terrans deserve another civilian ship:
The Terran Rock Collector.
(Medium mining vessel, waiting for the mining module).
Medium size mining vessel. For maximum efficiency it is equipped with two cutting laser turrets and a laser armed arm. The grappling arm completes the collection system.
Getting the hang of complex animations. Twenty in this design (count them). I know there is an error in one of them, but to correct it i would need to completely rebuild both the claw and its wrist construction. The animations were used to build the rotating tilting laser turrets, a telescopic multiple axes arm with a pitching panning laser head, and a fixed segment multiple axes arm with a wrist segment and an (one degree of freedom) claw.
