I'm going to be putting a lot of inside the sausage factory stuff in here this week.  Please do not repost what I put in there. :)

I don't think there should be a penalty at all for planets sending production to star bases within the solar system or about ten tiles. Were are the shipments of materials going if there wasted? A few tiles shouldn't have any penalties.

I understand why there are rules. its to prevent building on the other side of the galaxy, but there should be a minimum threshold. I would also like to have the option to still build planets side or modd it, if possible. IMO

DARCA. ;)

I would expect that if a shipyard is within 1-5 hexes of a planet that there will be no distance penalties from that planet. But if we start exceeding this distance, say around 6 - 10 hexes, a 10% penalty, 11-15 hexes a 25% penalty, 16-20 hexes 40% penalty, 21 - 30 hexes a 60% penalty, More than 31 hexes a 80% penalty.

I think the goal of the shipyard is to provide building ships for star systems with no penalty. Once you leave the star-system, then we are talking about some penalties are necessary otherwise it can be rather abusive or gamey.

I've already experimented with the idea, by dedicating planets to nothing but ship-building. As I get more planets in the system, I rush a factory to represent production from that other planet. The effect I see so far is an increase in ships on the map. This is a good thing in my opinion. Space although big should have quite a bit of activity from ships.

The effects of distant shipyards to provide a forward base are yet to be seen. I would also like to see a radius restriction. Cannot build within 3 - 5 hexes of another shipyard (or starbase if the shipyard is to be a module attachment)

I do not really see the point, You would always be limited by planets needing to be linked to any shipyard anyway. Building two shipyards next to each other would mostly be pointless but why put an active restriction on it?

I suppose there is no real reason to force the restriction. Depends on the mechanics on the shipyard. I suppose players might have fun building a wall of starbases / shipyards around their important planets.

I had thought about doing that long ago in GalCiv II, but that never felt cost effective. Might as well make a wall of ships. Which is not really effective either compared to a fleet and proper sensor range. But yeah, for lulz I could make a giant wall of starbase in the map.

Depending how they implement ship combat. They could use adjacent fleets to join in battle... they have been pretty mum on the subject (Begin engagement, send signal to nearby fleets for help, couple turns fighting have your adjacent fleets join the battle from hyperspace. It would look nice).

So adjacent star-bases would yield a problem in this type of system. But the grand doughnut of shipyards.

Okay, consider me impatient, or that I just have a different definition of "a lot" but I keep looking for more juicy tid bits. Anything more coming our way soonish? O:)

I am wondering when or if we can expect more, don't know about you but I'm really hyped about this and can't wait to get more info. I'm a GalCiv3 junky and the game isn't even out yet and won't be for a year.

Definitely. It looks like we're getting all the 'making of the sausage' details of specific gameplay elements.

If we refer back to the "Tentative Schedule" thread. We see that Alpha2 was about the tech tree and Ideology, which we are seeing now.

Thus we can infer that future documents will likely address new features as they are planned to be implemented. So in theory we might see a Shipyard document since that's slated to land in Beta 1A. Thena  document about trade/diplomacy/economy. Then a document about the Fleet Combat.

Also once the art asset pipeline gets fleshed out, we'll likely get more sneak peeks at new art assets for existing, or yet to be seen races (like Pirates).

Every time I read this and think there is new stuff in the vault, and there's nothing new. Quit giving me hope! X(

Finally something new in the Founder's Vault - Planet Screen Beta - Looks good, improvement on GalCivII but nothing amazing, nice layout, appropriate hex locations for Earth (even has lil' ole New Zealand on the map now!  :w00t:  ). Am liking the build queue icons. A small typo with 'bread bosket' rather than bread basket for the planet special trait which I am sure will be sorted.

I am loving what SD are doing overall and can't wait to see the final adjacency system rolled out, that said I do feel slightly underwhelmed with the planet screen if this is it, I had envisaged something more three dimensional/fresh in the art dept that would be more aesthetically pleasing but I could live with it.

back to the star port thing to me it would make sense if you could build only tiny hulls (maybe small hulls) planet side any tiny (small) hull with or without weapons

however anything larger would need the shipyard
