Ask the team your questions!

Hey everyone!

Looking for a chance to pick mormegil's (lead designer Paul Boyer) brain about what we're doing with GC3, curious about the art direction, or wondering what the design philosophies behind some of the changes on tap for the third game? You have come to the right thread.

I'm putting together what I hope will be the first of many community Q&A sessions with the Galactic Civilizations III team. Ask your questions in this thread, and I'll collect what I think of as the best of them and get them answered by the developers.

A few ground rules:

  • Be nice -- We're happy to answer things like "What made you go in such a different direction with the blue-skinned Altarian leader?" On the other hand, "Why does the new Altarian leader suck so much?" will be passed over.
  • The game is still in development -- We're not even in Alpha yet (soon!). We will try as always to be as forthright and frank as possible, but please understand if we're not ready to share super-specific details on systems that are still being designed.
  • If you're Frogboy, please hold your horses and let the rest of the team get a chance to answer some questions!

Fire away! If this goes well and you all come up with some quality questions, the responses should be up in a day or two.

Given all the threads on it and the endless speculation... is there going to be any player control/influence of ship combat at all? If so, what form will that take? (aka: Tactical combat?)

Any system requirements/suggestions beyond the windows 7/8 direct X 11 that you have previously stated?  To help those that may be looking for a new computer and wanting to make sure it can handle the game.

Any comment on the maximum size you're shooting for the galaxy?  ( I understand you may not want to commit to this yet )

How will each players space be figured (territory)?

Great, thanks! :)

How long will the campaign be? Bigger than GalCiv2? Will there be an interactive campaign selector (such as a 'space map' to choose scenarios in the campaign) or will the campaign be one scenario after the other with only a small briefing in between?)

Will there be cutscenes of quality such as the diplamacy screen we've seen or more on par with Galciv2?

Are there going to be animated parts in the ship designer?

I have many more but I'll let others have their say as well!

Relating to the story of the GalCiv universe; are there parts of the story that were told in GalCiv 1 and 2 that you now would like to have done different for a better storyline in GalCiv3 ?

What will the difference between the expansions and the dlc be?

How in depth will the new "Stellar topography" be? Will there be the suggested black holes, binary stars and the like?

How many civilizations will be in the game (not counting custom races)?

Considering this is on a 64 bit system will the number of AI players in a match be increased? if so any guess as to how many? also will the map sizes change and how so?

Will the Dread Lords play some part in the game? Either campaign or sandbox?

Will the Drath make an appearance in some form? How about the Xendar?

How many playable civilizations are you aiming for when the game launches?

Will there be hot seat multiplayer?

This is probably a given, but will the civilizations have different tech trees?

Will the Super Abilities make a return?

How different will the tech trees be? What I mean is, will they all be structured the same, but with some techs replaced with others, or will they all be uniquely structured?

Will certain game mechanics work differently for some races? For example: the morale-penalty for high population will be lower for the Torians, because they are used to live in crowded spaces.

Will some races have unique game mechanics? For example: the Drengin gain slaves when invading planets, which provide bonus production.

Why does the Thalan in the trailer look so humanoid? In TotA, the Thalan were described as the only non-humanoid race in the galaxy, because they have multiple appendages. It really made them stand out more among the other races, so I'm wondering why it was changed.

Will more than two of the "old" civilizations not make a comeback as playable races?

Awww! :p

If I have... er... I have a GeForce 8500 GT and 4Gb RAM. Considering that the only expenditure in the near future will be upgrading to 64 bits, will I be locked into little teeny-weeny maps even with all settings to the minimum? Will "2D map" save me?

Will we be able to see somewhere the avatar of our current race? Vanity demands that I can see that uber cool avatar I selected for my custom race (or the default one if canon race).

Do we get a "Throne Room" a la old Civ? Would be useless but fun to have one that we can decorate with stuff unlocked through the current game (A Drengin head after destroying them...).

Do you consider Heroes a la MoO? I say MoO because it's the sci-fi example I know but there may be other games as similar examples.

With the Korx gone, what of the iKorx? Did the Krynn take over?

I think that my questions are quite easy. :p

Since Stardock recently acquired rights to Star Control, will there be any "product placement" in GC3? For example, will you make the Zoq-Fot-Pik a minor race? :-D

What about the Yor not needing morale? I recall that they were supposed to different in GalCiv 2: Twilight of the Arnor, by not needing morale, but then we only got new planet improvements.

What can you tell us about how random events will work? Will they be divided into categories like the "normal" and "mega events" in GCII? About how many are there going to be, and how often are they likely to occur (and is that adjustable)?

What exactly happened to the Korath? They aren't mentioned in the Civilizations databank as either a current or former civilization. Will they be playable or appear in some other fashion, or are they just gone?

And since no one else has brought it up so far, I may as well be the one: what did make you go in such a different direction with the blue-skinned Altarian leader? And are any other returning races getting radical visual overhauls?

Are influence mechanics going to be similar to GC2? How much calculus will be involved in solving the influence system this time around?

To add in on the Yor Idea ie no morale, they also can't be spied on early game (they are ai love this tidbit from Sots 2 until u research AI tech no offensive espionage can be used against them but you can use your spy's to slow them down when they use them against you.)

Damn, you want questions...

Will wormholes return?

The idea that they are not anomalies in the sense how the scouts ships would beeline these suckers as they did in GC2 when they should go for normal anomalies ie ones that give ya good stuff (check box on explore button to ignore wormholes). Wormholes can be used once or can be used a few times before they close and or stay open the entire game. Even a one way stargate or 2 way stargate in game would be cool (make them rare).

In the campaign when you fail a mission will the campaign follow different routes (think Wing Commander) or will the it just end there and you have to redo the mission again until you pass? So Branching story?

Will there be Hero/leader units? (think Distant Worlds Legends/ Star Wars Rebellion/Sword Of The Stars 2/Moo Series) Really enjoy having people to control and exploit.

One thing lots of games suffer from audio wise today (GalCiv2's weapon sounds did this) even if you turn down the ingame audio in the settings sometimes its still crazy loud (even when you slide it to 1%.) Will GC3 have a better audio controls/passes?  Also some other games have built in audio option to reduce in game audio by x% when your in a voice chat when you talk or are other people are talking. This would be really nice.

Will all the killed off races be back in sandbox mode?

Can we have a separate program to design ships in when playing other games? Would love this!

Will their be wonder videos and victory/defeat videos?

Anymore info you can reveal about combat?

Multimonitor support?

Fullscreen windowed mode? easily alt tab out or mouse out of your game to do other tasks please?

In game lore section? Full audio too like Mass Effect series? Voiced technologies like Civ series?

More info on how stations are gonna be handled?

More multiplayer info? Can we watch other players combats between turns? (think Sword Of The Stars Series)

Can I apply for a job at Stardock even if I have never worked in the game industry before?

most likely, but, I don't think you'd get an interview :( unless you have some other amazing things on your resume :)

Are you suggesting coconuts MIGRATE?

I suppose a few 'broad' questions

1) How will you handle DLC vs expansions? In a broader model of should we see something like Game->DLC to fill time->Expansion1->few more DLC->Expansion2 kind of deal (yes I know on steam 'expansions' show up as DLC, but for sake of clarity I'm referring to them in the 'archaic' sense of the term)

2) What kinds of MP modes are expected to be at release? Mostly since Civ5 took 2 expansions and still is kinda junky for MP. I do realize that MP isn't the focus from a balance perspective. But are things like a stand alone dedicated server to host games so I don't have to run the full game for a few weeks at least in the pipeline? I don't want to run Galciv3 for 4 weeks. But a small server I can leave running in the background is fine (it also allows me to play my SP game while MP turns go on too!)

3) What sorts of 'pie in the sky' timelines do you have for how long the alpha/beta phases of the testing will run? Even if its just a percentage representation of time of like 40% alpha 60% beta kind of thing. I realize solid dates are not reasonable to ask for right now.

Maybe even a broad description like the Starbound beta is broken into 3 'phases' with no real timelines

My two main Questions for this time are:

1) Will there be Characters/Specialists in the game that pop up from time to time or are for hire on certain planets or… rescued at intergalactic structures?

My Vision would be:

They Support (give bonuses) or allow special “Moves” such as an Admiral that allows one additional/unique Tactic.

They are not Heroes in the WoM/LH sense (not of much use alone and no elaborate Skill tree) but have the chance, given time, to increase their bonuses or gain a new ability.

The have a finite lifespan/usefulness (depending on race or other factors)

2) Will there be Support for stellar Object or live-forms that can move on the main map or on a tactical map? (great for mods)  - aka shifting clouds, dark-stray-plantes (?), meteors, space whales,…

Thanx
Aygis

I'm curious about the battle situation...

Will there be tactical battles in space? -- controllable / watchable?

Will there be tactical battles on the ground (planet)? -- controllable / watchable?

If there are to be tactical battles, would it be possible from the main menu to allow a player to test out different battle scenarios to 'practice' / 'test' out our ship designs? (Even watchable ones)

Set it up to add ships on one side / add ships on the other side and press the "BATTLE!" button and see how this particular battle would turn out or how an auto-resolve would handle in this situation. I think this feature would be a bonus since the complexity of the units are moving up.

Will there be an editor to create custom galaxies? That is will the modders have easy access in creating a galaxy to their liking for multiplayer matches?

Also, will there be an option to "Set phasers to fun"?

Hey all --

Just an FYI, I'm now harvesting the thread for questions (great questions, btw!). Further questions deposited here will likely be ignored.

Thanks!

Only 1 day to ask questions? I was expecting more time. Oh well, the OP does mention that this will hopefully be the first of many Q&A sessions so we will hopefully get another chance to ask questions.

Will battle formations make a difference? Will you be able to give simple attack plans before the battle to tell the AI what you want units to be able to do?

Will ZOC be implemented in the game? Can I position my units to slow down enemy advancement? Is this an option on ground and/or the space maps?

Any chance we will see supply ships? Attrition?

I know these weren't in GalCiv2 but I thought, hey new game might as well throw it out there. If anything I would like to see ZOC. It makes tactical positioning a lot more interesting.

So, when will we get more screen shots?

or, an example of the tactical combat.
