Ask the team your questions!

Ask the team your questions!

Hey everyone!

Looking for a chance to pick mormegil's (lead designer Paul Boyer) brain about what we're doing with GC3, curious about the art direction, or wondering what the design philosophies behind some of the changes on tap for the third game? You have come to the right thread.

I'm putting together what I hope will be the first of many community Q&A sessions with the Galactic Civilizations III team. Ask your questions in this thread, and I'll collect what I think of as the best of them and get them answered by the developers.

A few ground rules:

  • Be nice -- We're happy to answer things like "What made you go in such a different direction with the blue-skinned Altarian leader?" On the other hand, "Why does the new Altarian leader suck so much?" will be passed over.
  • The game is still in development -- We're not even in Alpha yet (soon!). We will try as always to be as forthright and frank as possible, but please understand if we're not ready to share super-specific details on systems that are still being designed.
  • If you're Frogboy, please hold your horses and let the rest of the team get a chance to answer some questions!

Fire away! If this goes well and you all come up with some quality questions, the responses should be up in a day or two.

General Multiplayer question...

Would it be possible to run a server (on a separate computer) for the game?

1. Are we going to call the races species and the sub races races. I realize this is minor, but I think it is more appropriate to name it like this.

2. How many races are there going to be able to play. Not counting customization. I would like to see 83 like in freeciv. A lot of playable races are always nice.

3. Are we going to see a game where you can have an option to pick one of multiple leaders from the same race.

4. I like the idea of using player ships for the Ai. Are we going to be seeing this for tech selection and improvement building for the Ai races.

5. I liked Teturkministan in civilization 3 and how freeciv did it. Are we going to see more major races on the map at once and how many.

6. Can we load a image as an avatar from the game or should I change my avatar.

If they are going to named anything different, then it aught to be civilizations. Species is more accurate than races, but its not as accurate as civilizations. The fact is you can't guarantee that each civilization is composed solely by the founding species. In fact, the Krynn are canonical example that some civilizations are composed of multiple species. The Krynn, by lore in GalCiv 2 are composed of multiple species (they all evolved there), and now in GalCiv 3 the Korx are member species as well (they apparently decided to join up considering what happened to their civilization back in GalCiv 2). In fact, the new faction known as the Iridium Corporation are really a separate faction that split off from the Krynn. And what about the Korath (assuming they still exist)? They are technically race of Drengin.

An alternate candidate for a replacement name for "races" might be factions.

Where did you get that from? I don't remember anything being said about them, except that they are ultra-capitalists. Well, and that they've always been part of the lore, but I don't remember them being mentioned before either.

What plans for tech tree? Hoping for more complex relations with techs, at very least scriptable by modders if not on vanilla. Tech X requirs A and B; or requirse A or B with discount on cost if both; or no direct requirement but discount if A researched; or requires non-tech condition Y to be met to be available. And so on...

Will each race have it's own unique tech tree, as in ToA...?

Just an FYI, I'm now harvesting the thread for questions

I love the way you have described that. Hahaha.

Yeah. Stuff like that makes me wonder if people actually bother to read posts in a thread before posting. Its not like this thread is over a 100 posts long yet, nor is it hard to notice which post is made by a developer or moderator.

I can't figure out where exactly it says that off hand (I'm not good at keeping notes where everything is found), but I did check an image in the founder's vault before posting. It looked like some player was doing diplomacy with the Iridium Corporation. Try checking the file "UI_Diplomacy.jpg" (which has the Terran Alliance doing trade with the Iridium Corporation).

I'm trying to do some searching for details as for the Iridium Corporation now. I'll post back if I get confirmation as if they are a splinter faction of the Krynn (or maybe I'll make a new thread asking about it if I get frustrated).

The first time I heard anything about the Iridium Corp. was when the preview by PC Gamer was posted (which was the same day that screenshot got added to the Vault). That thread also contains the only information I could find about them, which boils down to what I said before.

I'd read the thread last night, and I must've missed that post. I guess the only reason to come back to this post is to check the answers. I guess any reply beyond 22 is fair game for replys since no one is going to answer these questions. I don't think that I'm going to answer any questions since this site is not about that. I guess that means no more questions on this post. Your right instead of calling the races species you could also call them civilizations or factions .

The post says likely to be ignored, but did not say they would be ignored. ;)

All questions are answered as they feel fit, they have not promised to answer all of them, just to look at the questions and see which questions they are ready to answer.  Remember they could just stop communicating with us all together and just throw us some bits here and there.  Feel honored that they are actually taking the time to speak with us and tell us about the game, give us access to the Alpha (for a fee) and Beta.  :)

Considering that multiple people commented, I'm pretty sure they're reading it. :P I just find it odd that they'd cut off questions in the thread so quickly.

Likely, this will be not the only Q&A Session... so strategically, a team needs some time to decide what to tell and mayby even adapt some designs based on the interests of it's founders (but this is not so likely ;) )
So fast harvesting means a manageable question size and faster answers - hopefully

I was hoping we'd hear back by the end of the week but today's Friday, so maybe next week :)

Edit:  Must be slow day being Friday the 13th, not much chatter here... :S

how much customizability will there be? especially in ship and race design and multi-player.

I've got a couple of questions about the Sandbox;

I was quite disappointed with GalCiv2's Milky Way map. Earth had a generic planet surface, and I'm pretty sure the Solar System was very off, too. So is there going to be a Milky Way map for the Sandbox? And could it have an accurate Earth and Solar System layout?

Will Sandbox games take place in this game's timeframe, or would there be a customizable element there?

Will there be a United Planets in Sandbox, or is that a thing of the past? Personally, I quite liked having it around,

I would also like a more realistic solar system to. The problem with the current layout you have only 5 planets. The milky way is a scenario not necessarily  the sandbox.

What about "uncontrollable" migration? Say from unhappy planets to happy ones, or from "overpopulated" world to less populated? Maybe from "planets with bad ecology" to planets with good ones? If yes, will we have certain mechanisms to control it, say, reduce taxes on some planets, or increase our expenses there, to motivate people, or to control our populations, up to total ban of unregistered relocation?

For the ground combat and colonization, are you going to do something about the scale of population?

It was always odd to conscript half a planets population, (luckily people seem to reproduce every week) stuff about a billion people into a single ship and drop them on the other planet where they take it over and immediately settle.

For our names to be in the special thanks credit, are you using our billing information or is there a segment we need to fill in order to have the appropriate name in the credit? I don't have a credit card so i don't have my name on the billing info.
