Battling lighting

Battling lighting

This week we’ve been messing with lighting in Elemental. Lighting makes the difference between something looking awesome and something looking awful.

Only difference here is lighting.  I suspect lighting will be something we battle with for months to come. We have time since, ahem, the betas are all cloth map… :)

The angle is good. I have the problem to see the dark thing that stands on the right side of the tent. I guess it is a guard tower.

I think you're looking at a cloud of smoke out of a chimmney :D

No smoke, but a computer at work. At home it is better.

I agree they both look Great and match the setting for each picture respectively. Perhaps implement a Day/Night cycle?

I think frogboy enjoys telling us it's cloth map only... he's EVIL!!!!!!  :)

I vote for the second one by far. The darker lighting makes the other colors pop out. The first one looks less crisp and a bit washed out to me.  Put in gamma and brightness options and call it a day :)

eh, give me two identical pictures, only change lighting, and then we talk. Currently we also have camera angle, cropping, and other such cinematic flavors at work here. Place them all together, and both pictures look good.

Now place 5 identical pictures side by side, with lighting being the ONLY difference (for reals this time) and then we can have people picking their favorites.

I vote 2nd although thats possibly because i'm baised against deserts.
End of TheGreatTurtle's quote

What??? I love desert!! I love the malakim too, er I mean the Shiia-Humans ... or Gypsy humans from hyrule type thing if nothing else.

Although the malakim were more or less anti-recon and trickery, and more truth based, the gypsy humans from Hyrule (I forget the name) were more recon/sorcery, all kinds of trickery ... like a Desert based Faeryl Viconia. However, with the lighting from the above picture, that desert reminds me more of a happy band of malakim.

Personally I would rather have a large variance of color tones than a large variance of lighting, although I do agree some areas of the map should be lighter and others could be darker. Perhaps a static cloud cover (perhaps affected by terraform spells) could affect this.
