Family reunion blues

Okay, I'm getting ready to go to our every-two-year family reunion. Let me say that going to this compares to, say, putting slivers underneath my fingernails, but I still go nonetheless. The worst part about this one is the brother that is going to be there with the new girlfriend while his kids-from-his-former-marriage walk around like they're zombies or something. Gawd, it's going to horrible. Then there's the cousin that flirts with any man that moves--family or not. Oh, and the uncle that drinks until he starts singing in a loud, off-key voice. Why do we do this to ourselves? If I could think of a way to get out of it I would, but it's expected that we go...just every two years...

Well it may be torture for you but I found your description amusing. Just remember you can pick your friends but you can't pick your relatives. Maybe you'll get lucky with your cousin - ha ha. At least it's not an annual celebration. Do they at least have good food? And it sounds like they have booze maybe you should join your uncle in a duet. That's probably why he is drinking is because he doesn't want to be there either.

Ha, yes, they have good food there...luckily! And good booze, and good beer.. Not that it's a drunken brawl or anything. Normally it's alright with music and games and good conversation. And gawd, no! No cousin, please! And no duet with the uncle either...first of all, you'd stuff cotton balls in your ears if you heard me sing, and second of all, he's the "cousins" father. Help me! Pleeeese!

I went to one with my brothers - to a side of the family were not that close to.
One of our cousins likes to "talk to the trees." He has a conversation?
We had a good enough time - but when we left - our comments were.....
OMG - are we really related to those nuts?
Wow - maybe we're not a goofy as we thought we were.
Geez - I see why Mom & Dad kept some distance from these relatives.

We have gone to a couple since then just for the entertainment. We only stay for a few hours - that's long enough.

Cordelia, thanks for the advice. **Note to self: Look at the reunion as a chance to write brilliant blog or two in the coming weeks.** By the way, yes, this was my first article, so thanks for the welcome.

And to Feisty: Thank gawd I'm not the only one who has to deal with crazy relatives. But at least you have something amusing to look at i.e., the cousin who talks to trees. Hey! Maybe my flirty cousin should meet YOUR cousin!

Enjoyed your post about the upcoming reunion!  Maybe I should say my thanks to the stars above that I've been unable to get to my family reunion for the last two years!

Okay, TrudyGL, what is your secret for getting OUT of your reunions! Tell all! Maybe I could develop some strange twitchy habit or something that prevents me from driving...

Feisty, an excellent idea! It would keep them both out of trouble and it might be fun for the rest of us to see what develops.

Gawd, who came up with the idea that family reunions are fun???
