After hotfixes, started a new game. My usual: Insane, abundant stars and habitable planets, common most everything else, 10 majors, all minors, challenging.
Turn 165:
- No crashes.
- No performance slow downs during turns with graphics options on custom (mostly high).
- Game takes a lot of time to think between turns. I don't remember it taking so long. I did set autosave to every turn.
- I did see a graphical glitch where the fog of war border didn't draw correctly, but I think this is one of the known bugs.
- I have 80 colonies. Of the races I've met, the closest to me has 50. The others have 20-30. Reason? Pirates. I love them. They seem to be balanced just right for a human player. (I do like the suggestion in another thread about ransom demands and stolen production/resources.) However, the AI is having a hard time dealing with them. As a human, I can reroute unarmed colony ships or decide to avoid an area of space until I have armed ships that can escort my ships or attack pirate bases. I even use a cheap scout to distract pirate fleets while I sneak colony ships around and colonize planets I couldn't reach directly. The AI doesn't seem to do any of this. It doesn't even try (that I've noticed) to arm colony ships and constructors, or escort them, or defend starbases with ships or improvements. Now, I've only met 6 majors and 4 minors, so maybe one of the other AIs has figured it out, but I have my doubts.
- The UIs are very good, though I wish the clickable areas were just a little bigger for those of us with coordination challenges.
- I do wish some of the explanations for tech and ideology perks were a little better. For instance, the structures that add ideology points in the Benevolent and Malevolent ideologies describe what they add, but the pragmatic structure (at the bottom, third one over--I'm not at my computer) only states that respect grows but doesn't describe whether pragmatic points are added. In tech, when it says +1 production, what exactly does that mean? +1 to a colony, or +1 to adjacency (farm specialization)? Or for production or research, it says +10% research or -20% cost. Cost of what? A tech? A structure? Now that specializations matter, I wish the explanations were clearer. I frankly didn't care as much before. Could be I'm just dumb and I need to look at the XML files.
- Approval bonuses from relics (and starbases +10% from benevolent perk?) are still not showing up in the colony popup.
- I really don't like the clown spring noise when clicking end turn. Could be just me.
I hope to stay with this current game so I can get further into an insane game.
