One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that in Star Control II, most of the history of the first war was spoken by CMDR Hayes as "I remember". There is a lot of detail that was never mentioned in Star Control I, and if Hayes got something wrong, well, he's been trying to keep a starbase alive, not study history.
