Is it even worth it for me to slap him down? Of course not. This sort of stuff is worse than worthless for most of us, even if we were wrangling with Evil S.

Well, I've finished the game I was on when I started this thread and almost finished another and I have two things to say about GCII income and spending: 1) For big-map games, working to avoid the over-20k penalty definitely yields massive cash flow differentials that are difficult to resist, and 2) Doing all that spending *every* turn is still somewhat awkward b/c you can't see build progress bars on the big Colonies page (nor can you spend on social items there) and the colon
So how about catering a little towards those like me? Is that too much to ask? I'm still not seeing how Stardock could "cater to" you other than by not offering regular patches and updates. Please confirm or correct my assumption that you believe a game should be bug-free (or very close) when it first ships. For what it's worth, I
With all due respect, Evil S, I can't quite follow your logic. How is a no- or low-bandwidth player put at a disadvantage by regular patches? This isn't an online game, or even a LAN game. Are you basing your objection on an assumption that software should ship bug-free the first time? If so, I appreciate the notion, but regretfully welcome you to the World of False Hopes. I've worked around software development for a long time, and only the very simplest software is bug-free,
Am I really the only one in here that is getting sick of this? I doubt any of us are "they only one" of anything--we've got 6 billion+ other humans around, and many thousands of them are apparently playing this game . But I'm your "opposition" re
I've done some software testing for different jobs and suspected that the Stardock folks couldn't afford to test much with the larger maps. But they did improve late game, gigantic galaxy play already by fixing the problem where en route ships lost their fix after you moved a rally point, and I'm pretty sure that they did it because massive-map folks complained here. Maybe there's a chance DA will have some movement-hiding options for us. They might not play much on la
Ensign is the FIRST rank, same as a PRIVATE Ensigns are officers, privates are not. I suspect the poster understands that, but wanted to take the silly quibble opportunity to mention that one thing I hope to see in the long-term evolution of this game (and the whole 4-5X genre) is an increased presence of "the people," be they the teeming masses
alot of strategy fans need something that will work on a laptop or just on their older machines Indeed! I'm looking forward to a better video card sometime in the next several months, but the underlying engine mechanics (modeling) are what matter most to players like me. I'd much rather see Stardock shift some investment from eye candy to enrichi
Which also should complain when they find incompatible hardware--a beloved old comlaint of mine. How stupid is it that you can whack out your desktop by applying "the latest driver" for your add-on cards?
Thanks, Kryo. If Windows or DX9 complained when I installed DX9, I must have missed it. p.s. I still gotta say I'm impressed with how well the game plays in a low-graphics mode, at least for us modeling-oriented folks.
Kryo, I know my VRAM is low, but the card supports DX9, which I've been running about as long as its been out. Do you mean that the card "specs" I've read are like Microsoft "minimum system requirements" (i.e. if we baby it in a lab, it will run that way, but only a fool would try it in production)? p.s. I know I've been "missing out" on the eye candy, but I'm a Civ junkie from way back and am most concerned about having a board-game like thing with ludicrous numbers of elements interac
I got an apparent restoration of normal function in ship editing after several game restarts (but not a system restart). I peevishly deleted the ship with the un-deletable parts, so I don't know if that changed too. To Monclova34: I said "humble-but-otherwise-workable video card." One of the things I admire about Stardock is that they have built a game that can produce fine eye candy for resource-rich players but still plays decently for those of us who do not believe a video card shoul
Egad, no!
No, I mean ships with names from my past games and some odd-looking things that I don't recall adding, like those Singularity Drivers. High on my wish list for the Shipyard is a "Hide Core Designs" option. I'm a role-player at heart, and those core clunkers have no character
I've seen this problem since the very early days, and it seemed to be getting better around 1.2, but in 1.3 betaX I'm seeing perhaps the worst behavior yet. Vexing things include: 1) parts on legacy designs that are only there visually (no effect on ship stats) and cannot be deleted (e.g. a Singularity Driver). 2) Corruption of the images for components (e.g. Photonic Torpedo). 3) New designs that will not generate an image in the Shipyard list. Something funny is going on with
Thanks for the tip on the 20k penalty. Re the "real world," if you're getting taxed at 50% you don't need to cheat, you just need to do a better job with the paperwork
I'm playing the 1.3 betaX, gigantic galaxy. My territory includes the most economic resources I've yet seen clustered together: 6 mines all within one to three sectors of my homeworld. It looked odd, but I thought about what some folks have posted about paying your way through a lack of morale, research, etc., and thought I'd give it a try. Things were fine for many turns after I got all the mines running at +44. But then something changed, and I'm not sure whether it was me b
Last activity over on the Wiki was late May. I guess this is a minority "need" among players and no one from Stardock has time to poke into the Wiki to note the gaps and errors. Alas, I suspect it is a corollary of the widespread decline in the value that software developers place on writing, both for interfaces and documentation. We all know that many text strings in Galciv II still need an edit
I'm almost unwholesomely fond of this game, but must agree that keyboard support (both in UI and docs) is sorely lacking. I started the crude page at the WIki but can only spend so much keyboard time on Galciv and playing is too captivating right now. But I suspect that it will be us users who get a decent list built sometime, and the wiki looks like the best place to do it, provided we can do a decent job of splitting "documentation" from "commentary."
I threw together that page as a start, hoping to get folks to help add the new 1.1 keys to the list and comment the ones that don't seem to work. The wiki seems like a great way to expand and update "the manual." I will be doing what updates I can from the 1.1 change log shortly (if no one beats me to it). I'm hoping (guessing?) that there are many more new keyboard shortcuts that did not get individual mention in the change log.
